When Kevin Williamson was watching the news, he learned of the Gainesville Ripper and started thinking about how this would work as a movie.

Sometimes a horror movie will begin with the phrase "inspired by true events" and that makes audiences wonder what really happened. In the case ofScream, which isbringing back original cast members for the fifth movie, there has been talk over the years that a real-life horrorstoryinspired the franchise.Thetale of Sidney Prescott missing her mother and being stalked by a killer in a costume is sad and terrifying, and discovering the inspiration behindScreamis scary, too.

Fans are always eager to learn all they can about this popular movie, like the fact that Neve Campbell and Wes Craven got along super well. Let's take a look at the true story behind the movie.

Neve Campbell left acting for a while and fansare thrilled that she's coming back to the franchise, as it wouldn't feel like aScreammovie without her.

Scream is inspired by the Gainesville Ripper. According toFilm Daily, in 1990 there was a serial killer named Danny Rolling in Gainesville, Florida. He ended the lives of several women at the University of Florida. He killed eight people in total and was arrested.

According toCosmopolitan, everyone on the campus was terrified, and no one went to class for seven days. In 2006, Rolling was killed via lethal injection.

There was even a horror movie calledThe Gainesville Ripperthat was released in 2010. It focuses on the five students on the college campus who were killed.

The true storyis definitely scary to think about, as the movie succeeds in being truly terrifying, especially the opening scene with Drew Barrymore. It sounds like the real events are just as horrible as what happened in this horror movie franchise and the details are just as gory and disturbing.

When Kevin Williamson was watching the news, he learned of the Gainesville Ripper and started thinking about how this would work as a movie. According toNerdist.com, the living room window was wide open, and that got his mind working.

Complex explains thatWilliamson is from a North Carolina town, and he was interested in acting. After that didn't work out, as he couldn't make a living, he was housesitting in the area of Westwood, Los Angeles, and that's when he saw the news.

Williamson thought that a killer could get into his house through the window, and he started writing a screenplay. At that time, it went by the nameScary Movie. Now movie fans associate that title with the film by the Wayan Brothers, but it definitely works as the title of a horror film, althoughScreamis a perfect name as well.

In an interview withCollider, Williamson was asked about his script forScream, and he was super humble about it. He said, "I look at it and think, wow, I cant believe I wrote that at such a young age. I also look at it and go, ohhh ouch, that dialogue, whoa." He continued, "In some places. Its hard. My perspective is always going to be skewed. Im always going to look and refer to things and remember things differently than perhaps a real or honest viewer can. Im tainted with knowing too much. But I still very much love it." Fans love it too and that's one reason why it's such good news that a fifth film will be released.

According toET Online, when Williamson heard about theGainesville Ripper, he thought that a movie about murders taking place on a college campus would be interesting.
