Red Rocket Movie Increased 94% at Box Office This Weekend – The Nerd Stash

Red Rocket is a new A24 comedy-drama directed by Sean Baker and co-written with Chris Bergoch. The film was released about a month ago on December 10, 2021. The two-hour and eight-minute comedy-drama is a story about a washed-up porn star, Mikey Saber. He returns to his small hometown of Texas City, Texas where hes not quite wanted back. Saber claims to be a new man, but he just keeps finding himself in troubling situations.

Red Rocket stars Simon Rex as Saber, who starred in Scary Movie 3, 4, and 5 as well as What I Like About You. Saber ends up butting heads with his estranged wife Lexi played by Bree Elrod. The new A24 film also stars Suzanna Son, as 17-year-old Strawberry, a character who Rexs Saber becomes enticed by.

The trailer was released on October 5, 2021 for Bakers second indie film distributed by A24 after The Florida Project. According to Box Office Mojo, A24s Red Rocket grossed $88,000 in domestic sales across six theatres when opening. With the films one million dollar budget, A24 was still far off from making any return. Weekend two, Red Rocket was in 16 theatres and made about $80,000 (a little less than the prior weekend.)

The third weekend, the Red Rocket movie was distributed to 377 theatres, and sales increased by +114.9% with total grossing sales of $372,000 to date. Much bigger than the opening weekend! In the past weekend, Red Rocket was distributed to just eight more theaters. Bringing weekend fours widespread theater count to 385. Despite the theater count being about the same as the weekend before, New Years weekend raked in almost $337,000 for the indie film. The +94.1% increase brought Red Rockets total grossing amount to $709,000 to date.

Though we havent seen a lot of advertising for this movie as much as weve seen Licorice Pizza commercials, it seems its picking up the pace. Is it possible word of mouth is pushing this movie into the mainstream media? With an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 73% Audience Score, Id say its definitely worth a watch.
