Scary Movies Top The Charts During Halloween Weekend – Horror News Network

For once in this insane, upside-down 2020, something actually made sensehorror movies were kings of the box office this Halloween weekend.

The new horror flickComePlaywas the biggest winner over this past weekendraking in more than $3 million from domestic movie theatersbut other genre films (both new and old) also cracked the Top 10, as reported bycomicbook.com.

Starting with the spooky weekends best earner,ComePlaywhich follows a couple fighting to save their son after a mysterious creature uses electronic devices to break into our worldenjoyed a profitable opening weekend. The filmwritten and directed by Jacob Chasestars Gillian Jacobs, John Gallagher Jr., Azhy Robertson and Winslow Fegley.

TheEmptyManin its second weekcame in fifth place at the box office, with $560,000 (for a total of $2.2 million). This filmbased on the BOOM! Studios graphic novel by Cullen Bunn and Vanesa R. Del Reytells the story of an ex-cop, on the trail of a missing girl, who uncovers a secret group trying to summon a terrifying supernatural being.TheEmptyManstars James Badge Dale, Marin Ireland and Stephen Root.

Coming in at sixth place was the re-release of the seasonal favoriteHocusPocus, which brought in $456,000 (for an overall total of $46 million).HocusPocusdirected by Kenny Ortega from a screenplay by Neil Cuthbert and Mick Garrisstars (of course) Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy. As reported here in Horror News Network, the cinematic Sanderson Sisters recently confirmed they will return for a much-anticipated sequel.

TheNightmareBeforeChristmaswas next in seventh place, grossing $386,000 in its third week of re-release (for an overall total of $78 million). The popular holiday classicdirected by Henry Selick from an idea by Tim Burtonstars the songs and score (and the singing voice) of Danny Elfman.

The originalHalloweenfrom John Carpenter and starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasencecame in eighth, taking in $315,000 in its second week of re-release (for an overall total of $48 million).Monsters,Inc. was ninth, grossing $232,000 in its second week of re-release (for an overall total of $257 million). The animated filmdirected by Pete Docterfeatures the voices of John Goodman, Billy Crystal and Mary Gibbs.Spell, in its opening weekend, rounded out the Top 10 with $210,000. The moviedirected by Mark Tonderai and written by Kurt Wimmerstars Omari Hardwick, Loretta Devine and Andre Jacobs.
