Almaty: A Bek Air plane with 93 passengers and five crew members on board crashed near the city of Almaty in Kazakhstan on Friday shortly after taking off, killing at least 15 people, authorities in the Central Asian country said.

The Fokker 100 plane, which was headed to the capital, Nur-Sultan, on a flight before dawn, lost altitude during takeoff and crossed a concrete fence before crashing into a two-story building, the Committee said. Civil Aviation of Kazakhstan.

A survivor told the Tengrinews news website that he heard a scary sound before the plane began to lose altitude.

The plane was flying with a bow. Everything was like in a movie: screams, screams, people crying, he said.

A Reuters journalist traveling to the airport shortly after the accident said there was a dense fog in the area.

The authorities have not suggested any possible cause of the accident. The aviation committee said it was suspending all Fokker 100 aircraft flights pending an investigation.

The Kazakh carrier Bek Air, which operates a fleet of Fokker 100 aircraft, could not be immediately contacted for comment.

Another survivor, businessman Aslan Nazaraliyev, told the Vremya newspaper that the plane began to shake as it gained altitude about two minutes after takeoff.

At some point we began to fall, not vertically, but at an angle. It seemed that control of the plane had been lost, he said.

At least 15 people died and 66 were taken to the hospital, including some in serious condition, municipal authorities said.

The accident site in the village of Almerek, just beyond the end of the track, has been cordoned off.

A Reuters reporter saw the plane torn apart in two parts next to a house half demolished by the impact. You could see other planes taking off from the airport.

Those responsible will face severe punishments in accordance with the law, tweeted the president of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, expressing his condolences to the victims and their families.
