The 10 Worst Movie Sequels Of The Decade (According To IMDb) – Screen Rant

Sequels have become somewhat expected in Hollywood these days. It's not even unusual for studios to plan sequels before the first film even hits theaters. Needless to say, this is not always a great idea as some sequels should really never have been made.

It can be tempting to return to a proven property again and again, but without a good reason, those follow-ups can really miss the mark and even hurt the image of the original film. We've seen a lot of great sequels over the last decade, like Mad Max: Fury Road and Toy Story 3. But there have also been some pretty unnecessary ones. Here are the worst sequels of the past decade, according to IMDb.

The Fifty Shades franchise was based on a massively popular book series so it was a no-brainer that it would head to the big screens. However, the series never did catch on with critics and was kept alive only by its core fans.

While the first film was a disappointment for many fans and critics, the sequel was somehow even worse. The second chapter finds Anastasia and Christian rekindling their romance as she contends with women from his past. The result was a messy continuation of the story which failed to deliver any thrills.

Tyler Perry has had a string of financially successful films which he often writes, directs and stars in himself. But despite the box office success, his films usually fail to get any love from the critics. Why Did I Get Married Too? is the follow up to his relationship comedy that follows a group of couples navigating the challenges of married life.

The movie featured a lot of melodrama, which is to be expected in Perry's films. Its exploration of relationships was not particularly insightful for many viewers either. However, the sequel's abrupt and ridiculous twist ending is what made it a disaster for most people.

The third and final Fifty Shades movie brought the franchise to a close, though few would argue it was a satisfying end. The film picks up with Anastasia and Christian starting their new married life together. However, their happiness is threatened by the dangerous Jack Hyde.

Many viewers saw this film as an oddly throwaway story that just seemed to want to end the series once and for all. There is nothing really added to the central relationship and the plot is as dull as the previous films.

The Ring was a massive horror movie hit from 2002 based on the Japanese horror film Ringu. It centered on a mysterious tape that, if watched, would result in the viewers' death in seven days. Ringspicks up years after the critically praised remake to delve deeper into the mythology of the deadly videotape.

The movie might have been a decent follow-up to the original if not for the obvious post-production meddling. The jumbled story and confusing timeline make for a confusing journey, and there are also more parts that have you rolling your eyes and/or laughing rather than jumping in your seat.

Bringing a beloved television show to the big screen can be a risky move, but the first Sex and the City movie managed to be a hit and satisfied the fans of the show. They could have stopped there, but unfortunately, Sex and the City 2 came about which followed the four fashionable friends on an adventure to Abu Dhabi.

The movie didn't seem to offer anything new to the series outside of a new vacation destination and going over well-worn themes and messages. Some of the negative aspects of the film could have potentially been forgiven if not for the sequel's unnecessarily long runtime.

It's surprising that a movie in which Martin Lawrence dresses up like an overweight old woman was able to spawn two sequels. Big Momma's House was a solid hit for the comedian and while the second film wasn't as successful, it paved the way for this third outing. Lawrence returns to team up with his son to go undercover in drag to track down a killer in an all-girls school.

With a premise that cringe-worthy, you can only imagine what watching it must be like. Lawrence seems to be sleep-walking through the movie now and any spark that existed before is long gone.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid has been a low-key series that has been able to find a strong enough audience to justify four films. To date, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul is the final film in the franchise and is likely to remain that way if the reception is any indication. This time around, the sequel finds the Heffley family setting off on a road trip which goes wildly off course.

Fans were unhappy with the changes to the original cast which was only the start of the film's issues. The jokes feel like they were rejected from an old sitcom and the attempts to reference "current" trends just fell flat.

Nicholas Cage missed out on becoming Superman, so he had to settle for becoming a lesser-known comic book hero, like Ghost Rider. While his first outing as the biker vigilante with a flaming skull was a letdown, Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance looked more promising thanks to a stellar cast and an R-rating.

This movie could approach the "so bad it's good" category at times with the pure insanity of the movie and Cage's predictably unhinged performance. However, for long stretches, the movie is just really, really boring.

Robert Rodriquez is not a filmmaker many people would think of to create a family-friendly action franchise. However, Spy Kids turned out to be a fun ride for all ages. But as the sequels went on, fans found themselves hoping Rodriquez would return to his more violent roots.

Spy Kids 4-D was meant to function as both a sequel and a reboot to the original film. Sadly, it failed to achieve either. The gimmicky "4-D" addition makes it seem like a movie was cobbled together around this incredibly dumb idea resulting in a nonsensical and joyless adventure.

Scary Movie was a wildly popular comedy film that wisely took aim at the slasher genre, which is ripe for parody. The series tried to continue by exploring various types of horror films before devolving into a mindless riff on pretty much anything pop culture related, while shoving D-list celebrities in for a desperate laugh.

Scary Movie 5 was the dying gasp of the franchise as it finally ran out of steam. The jokes were lazy and unimaginative, the actors all seemed bored or embarrassed by being there (not that we can blame them), and it was an unfortunate laugh-less end to a once entertaining series.
