The Hunt: How Scary & Violent Is The Movie | Screen Rant – Screen Rant

How scary is The Hunt, the controversial new horror film from Blumhouse? After the delay of its initial release last September, Universal retooled their marketing to focus on the reputation of the movie as opposed to the films content. However, questions have lingered about just how scary and violent The Hunt actually is.

The film follows a disparate group of people who are kidnapped and hunted down by rich elites. One of the hunted, a veteran (Betty Gilpin) soon becomes the hunter when she decides to turn the tables on her captors one-by-one. Directed by Craig Zobel and written by Damon Lindelof and Nick Cuse, The Hunt aims to be just as much a social satire as a horror film. While critics are mixed in their response to the satirical elements, most have praised the films use of action and horror.

The MPAA has rated the film R for strong bloody violence, and language throughout. While bloody violence is a hallmark of modern horror films, it doesnt always translate into any real scare factor. Here's a breakdown ofThe Hunt's R-rating.

The Hunt is just as much a social satire as it is a horror film. Critics, in drawing comparisons with Blumhouses Get Out, have said that it aspires to be a social thriller in the same vein. However, it seems The Hunts tongue-in-cheek representation of modern-day political strife undercuts any serious, horrifying message to leave on the minds of the audience after the film is over.

Much of what could be said to be scary about The Hunt stems from creative uses of gore. While this is usually a plus for big-time horror fans, general audiences looking for pure scares can sometimes find gory violence to be off-putting. This is where the thriller elements of the film provide some saving grace, keeping the pace of the film ramped up while also throwing the audience plenty of twists, turns, and curveballs.

The title of the film alone is a dead giveaway that The Hunt is full of violence. While the premise of one group of people hunting another isnt new, the filmmakers got inventive when it came to developing interesting ways to dispose of the cast. Needless to say, there are copious amounts of blood and gore, and it is the execution of these elements that lead The Hunt to be classified as an R-rated horror film.

There is also language used throughout The Hunt, mostly f*ck and sh*t.The Hunt features no nudity.
