The Scariest Horror Movies Coming Out in 2020 – Cosmopolitan

Of all the things to look forward to when welcoming the new year, horror movies should be at the very top of your list. Oh? You haven't heard? 2020 is gonna be a PRIME year for all things creepy, spooky, and thrilling. Don't worry, I got ya covered with some of the most anticipated flicks coming out this year along with their release dates. Get ready to snuggle up to your boo (or bestie!) in fear with these flicks below!

Hollywood loves to remake the classics and horror movies are especially ripe for this trend. If you thought the original The Grudge was horrifying, imagine it now with all the new tricks that production companies have learned to do with special effects and editing since its original release in 2004. This version follows a house that is cursed with a vengeful ghost that isn't afraid to kill violently, okay? I'm already shaking.

This film stars Finn Wolfhard and Mackenzie Davis and is a modern take on Henry James' novella "The Turn of the Screw". Shoutout to Wolfhard for absolutely killing all his roles in scary movies recently. According to IMDb, the film features "A young governess [who] is hired by a man who has become responsible for his young nephew and niece after the deaths of their parents." Nothing quite as scary as nineteenth century orphans, amiright?

This reboot of a classic flick looks so freaking eerie. It follows a woman (played by Elizabeth Moss) who is haunted by her abusive ex after he takes his life and she is offered 5 million in his will on the condition that she can prove that she's mentally competent. All of this would be fine and easy if she weren't being tortured by an invisible stalker that nobody else can see. Uh yeah, this is easily my worst nightmare and simultaneously a ticket I'm gonna buy asap.

After the huge success of part one, A Quiet Place Part II only seems natural. The plot is currently unknown, but the film is in post-production and is set to release on March 2020, so we'll be getting all the creepy deets soon. Although a trailer hasn't been released yet, here's a quick vid of actor/director/The Office fave John Krasinski giving out some first details about the highly-anticipated sequel below:

Yet another huge movie that's being kept under wraps for now, this new installment of the classic Saw movies is supposed to be suuuuuuper twisted. Chris Rock is the writer for this ninth installment of the Saw franchise and the project is quoted as being a "re-imagining of the horror film". Whatever this turns out to be, I'm sure it'll be just as terrifying, if not even scarier, than all the other Saw movies. With no official trailer out yet, here's a quick vid on a recap of the previous movies as well as what we know about this upcoming film below: (Jump to 5:30 in the video to skip past recap stuff!)

This movie looks terrifying. A new Guillermo del Toro film, Antlers follows an elementary school teacher and her brother, the local sheriff of a small Oregon town, as they discover that one of her students has a dark twisted secret. Um, hello! Finally a wendigo movie with a real wendigo. (FYI, a wendigo is a freaky badass man-eating spirit from Algonquian tribal lore). Check out the trailer below:

The story of Michael Meyers isn't over yet! I can't wait to see Jamie Lee Curtis play Laurie Strode again, TBH. The remake that was released last year was incredible, so we have high hopes for this one! It's a bit too early to tell what will happen this time around, but here's an official teaser trailer below to get you ready:

Oh my god, this movie comes out on NYE and UHHHH that's a bit too much for me to process at the moment. That said, this movie has horror fans super excited. It follows a group of mercenaries trying to pull off a heist during a ZOMBIE OUTBREAK in Las Vegas. To quote Rick Sanchez,

Adult Swim

Anyways, this film will be released on Netflix and stars Dave Bautista and Chris D'Elia. Can't wait. There's not a trailer released yet, but here's a sick picture to get you excited!
