‘The Wayans Bros.’: See the Iconic Sitcom’s Cast Then and Now – Closer Weekly

Every 90s kid probably remembers The WB but do you recall what the channels first-ever original series was? The answer, of course, is the iconic sitcom The Wayans Bros., which starred real-life brothers Marlon Wayans and Shawn Wayans. Premiering on January 11, 1995, and airing for five seasons until May 20, 1999, this series introduced the world to the talented siblings.

The premise was simple: Shawn, 49, and Marlon, 47, starred as the titular brothers using their actual first names but traded Wayans for Williams who run a newsstand near their Harlem apartment up on 117th Street in New York City. The late John Witherspoon played their dad, John (a.k.a. Pops), who owned a restaurant called Pops Joint. The beautiful Anna Maria Horsford played a security guard at a fictional building in Rockefeller Center near where the newsstand and restaurant were moved beginning with season 2.

When John sadly died from a heart attack at the age of 77 in October 2019, Marlon and Shawn fondly remembered him for the man they were lucky enough to have known, loved and work with.

Im sad. Broken. Hurt, Marlon wrote on Instagram at the time. Yet extremely grateful to God that I got to spend 5 years of my life working with one of the funniest, sweetest, wisest, humblest, loving man [sic] @johnnywitherspoon. You were my TV dad and mentor and my friend. I miss you already. Something doesnt feel right. This is heavy on my heart.

Man I cried myself to sleep last night just thinking about how much Im going to miss you. You are one of the funniest, coolest, wisest dudes I ever met and a joy to work with, Shawn penned in his own Instagram tribute. Thank you for all of the laughs and wisdom you shared with me and my brother throughout the years and also for helping us keep our cool during The Wayans Bros as we fought to make that show what it is.
