AMC partners with the AD Council, highlights STEM in Walking Dead world – Undead Walking

This week AMC Networks Content room and the Ad Council announced a public service announcement campaign that will highlight the power of girls in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) by using The Walking Dead universe. These PSAs will go behind the scenes highlighting how TWDU uses STEM to create the apocalyptic world features in the series.

The campaign sought out the talents of Walking Dead actor and director Aisha Tyler, Costume designer Vera Chow and Art Director Jasmine Garnet to create the content showing how they use STEM in their specific jobs in the TWD universe.

The campaign is titled She Can Stem and encourages girls, trans youth and binary youth around the country to see what is so exciting about STEM.

You can view check out two of the PSA videos below with some fantastic BTS information from the talented crew of The Walking Dead universe.

The campaign will consist of TV spots and custom videos posted on Tik Tok and Instagram and feature 16-year-old scientist, inventor and activist Gitanjali Rao. Tyler, Chow and Garnet talk to Rao and show how STEM is a vital part of their jobs as director, costume designer and art director on the set.

Although women make up half of the college-educated workforce in the US, only 27% work in STEM-related positions. She Can Stem helps keep young girls, non-binary youth, and trans youth engaging in STEM through middle school, high school, and on to careers in the field. The campaign aims to show how fun, messy, diverse and accessible careers in STEM can be.

Kim Granito, EVP of AMC Networks Content Room, had this to say about the partnership on this campaign:

We are thrilled to partner with the Ad Council to inspire young girls in STEM through the unexpected backdrop of The Walking Dead. Over the last 11 years, this universe has been created by an array of insanely talented women that utilize STEM every day in their roles. This campaign will broaden perceptions of STEM beyond the stereotypes of lab coats and beakers, and hopefully inspire the next generation of talented women in STEM. Aisha Tyler, Vera Chow and Jasmine Garnet were a dream to work with and their shared enthusiasm for this mission is inspiring.
