Shane Walsh was never meant to last on AMCs hit showThe Walking Dead. From day one, his path had always been to betray Rick and die in the process. While he has a much larger role on the show than he did in the comics, Shane was always meant to be toast before the group finds the prison.

Jon Bernthal, who played Shane, knew all of this going in. But according to the actor, he preferred it that way. He says as much in a new interview with IGN when asked about his stint on the m ost popular show on television.

Bernthal says that when originally auditioning for the show, all the actors had to read for both Rick and Shane. Even then, Bernthal had no interest in playing Rick, and told show developerFrank Darabont as much. Darabont kindly told Bernthal that Shane wouldnt last on the show, but that only sweetened the pot for the actor:

For what its worth, Bernthals current deal as the Punisher should provide better job security. Bernthal has portrayed the Marvel antihero on NetflixsDaredevil, and is set to reprise the role in his own solo spinoff series.
