A man is in Detroit police custody after allegedly killing his 64-year-old mother with a spiked baseball bat, an unusual weapon thrust recently into pop culture prominence by theTV show "The Walking Dead."

Officers were called at about 12:30 p.m. to the home on the 7700 block of Bramell near Ann Arbor Trail on the city's west side.Police arrested the son, who is in his mid-30s, at the home,spokeswoman Officer Jennifer Moreno said.

The woman, who is the suspect's mother or stepmother, was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was injured.

Commander Aric Tosqui, commanding officer of the 6th Precinct, said the victim's granddaughterhad come to the housebut the suspect wouldn't let her inside, so she broke out windows in an attempt to gain entry.

Moreno said the man had assaulted his mother using a baseball bat covered in spikes. Such a weapon is typically homemade, she said. It's unclear what material was used to make it.

The man is the sole suspect in the case.
