‘Morgan’ reaches his breaking point on ‘The Walking Dead’ – MDJOnline.com

"Be careful what you wish for," said Lennie James, who portrays Morgan on "The Walking Dead."

That was the response James gave at Walker Stalker Con in October, when I had the opportunity to meet him and ask what everyone is curious to know...about the non-violent turn his character took after his encounter with Eastman and if recent events (at the time) would cause him to revert.

"Do you feel like Morgan will deviate from not wanting to kill walkers or people and go back into survival mode," I asked.

"I think that Morgan is going to be tested this season, just like he was tested last season. You'll just have to watch and find out which side he comes down on," said James.

Now, with not being able to give away any details, James's answer, knowing the extreme unpredictability of 'The Walking Dead,' could have meant anything.

On Sunday's episode, audiences got a clear answer.

"Morgan" definitely reached his breaking point when a chance exchange encounter with the Saviors brings him back to where Rick, Michonne and Carl find him in the second half of season 3 in "Clear."

King Ezekiel and members of "The Kingdom" approach a line of shopping carts that are blocking off an area and Morgan has this eerie look on his face.

Before making the exchange, Ezekiel and the group come across an empty gravesite that says "Bury Me Here."

It was Morgan who dug that shallow grave, that he intended for himself at the point where he wanted to die.

They are there to reluctantly make their obligatory offering to the Saviors, this time of a dozen melons, but to everyone's shock comes up short.

Ezekiel, who assured the count, having conducted it himself, is puzzled by how it could have come up suddenly short.

It would appear that coming up short is not out of the ordinary, so the Saviors resort to a resolution, right then and there.

For some reason, a gun is pointed at Richard's face, to which he responds, "just do it."

We are led to believe that this is the end for Richard, but at the last second, the gun is pointed away from him and at someone else who is behind him.

Of course, in true 'Walking Dead' style, the camera doesn't show us who is behind him and it goes to commercial immediately after gunfire.

My prediction that it was Morgan's young apprentice, Benjamin, who was the unlucky victim of a shot that proved to be fatal.

Under the insistence of Ezekiel, Morgan took Benjamin under his wing to teach him the ways of aikido, in hopes it will improve his defenses.

Nothing could have prepared anyone, especially Benjamin for that. In an effort to save him, the group ends up at Carol's house, but nothing can be done.

Morgan takes the action that will prevent Benjamin from turning.

Benjamin was like another son to Morgan, so losing him took him to the time when he lost his own son, Duane, whose name he says by mistake in a heated argument with Ezekiel.

This leads us to believe that, we know Duane turned, but maybe how he died isn't what we assumed. Is Morgan responsible? Of course we don't find out.

As Morgan is walking back through his darkness and has flashbacks of what he was, then in anger, kills a small herd of walkers, then kicks a crate, only to find the missing melon underneath.

He somehow figures out that Richard is to blame and insists he come clean.

Richard claims he did it, so the Saviors would take revenge on him and kill him because he was sick of nothing happening to change the way things are and insists on being the lead of action against the Saviors.

Assuring Morgan that he would confess to Ezekiel, the next time we see them all is prior to another exchange.

Morgan just loses it and kills Richard, starting with the staff and then with his bare hands. Brutal, but Morgan is blinded by rage.

Morgan isn't the only one who does a 180, Carol does as well. Early on, we see her startle from sleep, with the feeling that something just isn't right, so she heads to The Kingdom for answers.

Carol confronts Morgan about why Daryl, Rick and Michonne came to The Kingdom, asking if everything is okay, but just as she told Morgan to keep her secret, of where she is after leaving the kingdom, he's keeping theirs and insists that she needs to find out for herself.

"If you go, I'll go," said Carol to Morgan, who returns to the cottage and reveals the truth about our heroes, Alexandria, the Saviors, Glenn and Abraham.

We assume she means back to Alexandria, but they just switch places.

Finally, Carol returns not only to The Kingdom, but perhaps her former self as well. She approaches Ezekiel and says we need to fight back to which he agrees, finally.

Morgan is sitting on the steps of the cottage and assumingly sharpening his staff into a spear, so we all know that time of zen has expired.

Will we learn more about the switch and what's next from The Kingdom's perspective? All the preview shows us is an attack on the Hilltop by the Saviors in the search for Daryl, so who knows how it all connects, but we know it is going to be good.

'The Walking Dead' airs Sunday on AMC at 9 p.m.
