Rick Is Back, Baby: ‘The Walking Dead’ Season 8 Opening Scene Puts The Focus Back On Rick Grimes, Not Negan – moviepilot.com

While The Walking Dead hasn't stumbled as hard as some other prime time television series, no one can deny that the show has definitely lost sight of some of the roots that have made the show what it was.

One of the main things Season 7 did was shift focus from #RickGrimes and onto #Negan and other characters. Fortunately for all the Rick Grimes fans out there, this will no longer be the case in Season 8, and the opening scene of the upcoming season proves it.

The war that was teased throughout the entire seventh season kicked off in the season finale with a huge battle including Alexandria, the Hilltop and the Kingdom going against the Saviors and the Scavengers. It made sense, as the entire season had focused on fleshing out #Negan's character.

But executive producer Greg Nicotero revealed exactly how Season 8 begins and it's clear that Rick will receive a lot more attention this season. Nicotero said:

"We start season eight with a close-up shot of Rick Grimes, and we soon feel that he is the one who dominates the plot, not Negan."

#TheWalkingDead, like a few other series, is largely an ensemble show with a vast array of characters. Even so, those series should have a main protagonist that we consistently watch develop every season. In Season 7, Rick was scarred from Negan's head-crushing introduction and for the majority of the season, the once fearless leader took a step back. While it made sense last season, fans started getting restless for Rick Grimes to get back to being Rick Grimes by the finale. It was overdue for Rick to decide that Alexandria could not live in fear anymore and that they must rise against the Saviors.

In the Season 8 official Comic-Con trailer, we definitely got the sense that Rick would play a much bigger role. In fact, the last scene in the trailer featuring Old Man Rick hints at some amazing Rick moments in the season premiere, which is also the 100th episode.

#GregNicotero also revealed that the 100th episode will include some amazing Easter Eggs as nods to previous seasons. It's yet another way to return the show to its roots.

"In multiple viewings you'll definitely pick up a few things that we put in there that harken back to earlier episodes."

We can only hope that the show will learn from the mistakes it made in Season 7 and return with a kick-ass eighth season, and from the sounds of it, it will. Putting #TWD's attention back on Rick and harkening back to the previous seasons is a step in the right direction. The Walking Dead returns on Sunday, October 22nd at 9/8c.
