The Boys Is Such A Massive Hit For Amazon Its Getting A Spin-Off – Forbes

The Boys

When I heard that The Boys was getting its own after-show discussion series, I compared it to Amazon finding its own Walking Dead, a megahit theyre going to invest in for everything its worth.

Now, that comparison has gotten even more exact with a new spin-off coming.

The Boys season 2 has been performing extremely well for Amazon, with the company reporting that viewership for the series has grown 89% so far over the first, and thats even with spreading out the episodes into week to week releases. It was picked up for a third season before the second one even began airing, and seems likely to be a fixture on Amazon Prime Video for a while, where true megahits are few and far between, outside of the occasional Emmy winner like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel or Fleabag.

The Boys may not be winning any Emmys, but the massive viewership has inspired another Walking Dead-like move. The show is reportedly getting a spin-off helmed by Craig Rosenberg, who is currently a writer and EP on the main series.

The show, which does not have a name yet, has the following description according to Variety:

The spinoff is set at Americas only college exclusively for young adult superheroes (or supes) that is run by Vought International. It is described as an irreverent, R-rated series that explores the lives of hormonal, competitive supes as they put their physical, sexual, and moral boundaries to the test, competing for the best contracts in the best cities. Part college show, part Hunger Games with all the heart, satire and raunch of The Boys.

My name prediction: The Boys: Supe U

The Deep

Ive heard some pushback about the series focusing on a superhero college for this, but honestly I think it sounds kind of perfect for the universe of The Boys, considering how extreme they could make the concept. I mean, imagine superhero fraternity hazing. So far as I can tell this would not be based on any existing source material like the original series, so that aspect of it would be a bit of a risk.

As of right now, we have no date as to when this series will manifest, but if were doing The Walking Dead model, it will probably be whenever The Boys is not airing, so in that case it would probably either be spring or summer. So I would say that summer 2021 may not be out of the question, depending on how fast production could spool up, and it could serve as a run-up to The Boys season 3, similar to how Fear the Walking Dead was a lead-in to The Walking Dead (before the pandemic totally screwed up allthe release schedules this year). If not, probably spring/summer 2022.

We are only two seasons into The Boys and the show is still great so far. But of course its prudent to be concerned that Amazon might take it too far and again, echo The Walking Dead, this time with an eventual quality dip. But well see where it goes.
