THE Walking Dead is operating on borrowed time.

The AMC zombie drama is currently on hiatus, with the second half of season 10 set to kick off in February.

However, the future of the show is decidedly uncertain after Robert Kirkman, the author behind the comics upon which the show is based, decided to bring the saga to an end.

Kirkman also serves as an executive producer on the show, so many were left scratching their heads when bosses admitted they hadnt been given notice that he planned to call time on the apocalyptic universe.

Now artist Charlie Adlard, a long term friend and colleague of Kirkman, has spoken out about the decision to draw the graphic novels to a close.

Having worked on the project since 2004 its safe to say hes invested in the franchise, but he stood by Kirkman for ending on a high note while the comics remained popular.

Nonetheless, he conceded that there was plenty of fear when it came to anticipating the reaction from fans when Kirkman attended San Diego Comic Con earlier this year.

I wasnt there, but I remember Robert was talking to me and he was saying he was going to go to San Diego, and that was going to be the first encounter post the end, he recounted on Skybounds Talk Dead to Me podcast.

And he said, I reckon well get 50% people saying well done, and 50% of people wanting to kill us, he continued.

Its fair to say the reaction to the news on social media was decidedly critical, with many predicting it marked the beginning of the end of the TV series.

However, Adlard said the folks at the convention were far more gracious in person.

The majority of people were all thumbs up and just saying, Yeah, youve done exactly what you should have done. Which was great. Its great to have the fan support, as well. That was really brilliant, he continued.

I think most people appreciated the fact that we ended this book on our own terms, before the book was gonna lose sales and then it becomes obvious why you end a book.

So yeah, we went out on our own terms, still on a high, on a creative high. I think the fans really appreciated that, so thank you, everyone.

Kirkman ended up addressing readers with a lengthy goodbye letter, in which he thanked Adlard for keeping him in check.

He credited the artist for shooting down meandering side stories and drawn out plot lines, which could have seen the comics continue for 300 issues.

The Walking Dead returns to FOX on 24 February and will be available to stream on NOW TV.
