The producer Robert Kirkman, of the comics upon which the popular AMC zombie is a drama based. The creator ended his comic book series recently without ever revealing the origin of the zombifying infection.

Now, at long last, he has though his answer may be tongue-in-cheek. When the sources asked on Twitter what the cause of the apocalypse was, he said, Space spore. In other words, this whole time, the zombie apocalypse was an alien invasion.

Finally, it does not matter what the cause of the zombie apocalypse was. That is not the point of The Walking Dead. The Cause only matters if the story is about finding a remedy. On the other hand, I think The Walking Deadwas at its best when there was some light of hope.

When Eugene had his journey, at least there was something to look forward to, with some useful purpose. Ever since that was revealed to be a lie the show has struggled aimlessly in a repetitive and predictable loop. Turns out, having a purpose and working toward some appearance of an ending is actually quite helpful when it comes to creating a compelling narrative.
