The Walking Dead season 10 spoilers: Carol Peletier in …

The finale of The Walking Dead season nine paid startling homage to Robert Kirkmans comic books, and fans of both would have instantly put the pieces together.

In the series, Lydia (played by Cassidy McClincy) nearly took her own life via a walker, in what were dramatic scenes from the zombie horrors finale.

In the graphic novels, this honour was given to Carols (Melissa McBride) equivalent character, but she actually succeeded.

The twist came about when Lydia discovered her mother Alpha (Samantha Morton) had murdered ten people, one of whom included her boyfriend Henry (Matt Lintz).

Devastated by her own flesh and bloods choice, Lydia contemplated whether she could live on in the post apocalyptic world and toyed with getting close to one of the walkers to see what would happen.

Edging nearer and nearer to a growling undead creature, Lydia held out her arm across the lake, but luckily the character changed her mind at the last second.

In the comics, Carol went through with her plan when she walked towards a chained walker and allowed it to latch onto her neck, killing her almost straight away in front of her Atlanta allies.

Speaking about the twist, Angela shed light on the writers decisions to Entertainment Weekly in the aftermath of the episode.

I just loved seeing all of the frozen zombies, she said. And I love it when Lydia comes upon that frozen walker in the lake.

The interesting thing that comic book fans may or may not pick up on, is were actually doing an homage to Carols death in the comic book.

She basically commits suicide by zombie, and we have Carol from the show whos well outlasted Carol from comic books shes watching this moment play out between Lydia and the zombie.

And I just think that the production design of that scene, the way that Greg [Nicotero] directed it, the way the zombie looks, all of that was very evocative. And then of course, Cassady who plays Lydia, and Melissa, theyre so wonderful and emotional.

Theres so much rawness that they bring to their performance that I think it ended up being this really special scene that I really love.

In the finale, Carol was struggling with the loss of her adopted son so much she and husband Ezekiel (Khary Payton) separated.

We came at it from a perspective of Carol has had these chapters in her life. In a lot of ways, when Sophia (Madison Lintz) died, that catapulted her into another chapter of her life, Angela continued.

She had to question this abusive relationship she had, her feelings of inadequacy, her feelings of weakness.

And she eventually became the badass, you cant mess with me Carol that we know and love. But that all came at a cost.

Having to kill and kill and kill and kill, it really took a toll on her.

The Walking Dead season 10 will return to AMC later this year.
