The Walking Dead star blasts bisexual stereotypes and being forced to constantly come out – The Sun

DANIEL Newman has slammed biphobia as The Walking Dead star opens up about discrimination he has faced as a bisexual man.

The actor, 39, came out in 2017 and said stereotypes around bisexual people were hurting the community.

Daniel, who starred onThe Walking Dead for 10 episodes from 2016 to 2017, said: "People define bisexuality in so many different ways. I personally define it as taste and preference.

"You can completely have monogamous relationships it doesnt mean youre straight if youre with someone of the opposite sex, or that youre gay if youre with someone of the same sex.

"It means you made a choice to be in a monogamous relationship."All the rest of it is stereotypes like, oh, if youre bisexual youre never satisfied, or theyre always going to cheat, yadda yadda. A bisexual person loves a connection with a human being, and theyre comfortable with either or."

Daniel explained many bisexual men kept their sexuality a secret because of the stigma around, especially from within the LGBTI community.

He told Metro.co.uk: "The strength of culture depends on diversity and people being able to be themselves. So whenever youre suppressing one part of the culture, youre damaging the entire LGBTQ.

"When I came out, I was playing an action warrior on the biggest show in the world at the time. I still get hundreds of tweets and social media messages from guys all over the world saying, 'Im so happy we have the LGBTQ but I dont see anybody I relate to, so I feel like we dont exist'."The Eastsider actor added: "Like, professional athletes, finance guys, that all reached out to me about representation and how its so important.

"Our community is full of stereotypes. No group should be forced to be one stereotype, one type of human being. I had this huge outpouring of support.

"But sadly, when I replied to these guys, 95% of the guys werent out. They said 'well, nobody thinks Im gay so theres no point bringing it up'."

Several studies have shown bisexual people have poor mental health because of ongoing stereotyping and discrimination.

Daniel also slammed being forced to come out over and over again.

He said: "Im still coming out to this day.

"Especially as a bi man, everybody just assumes youre straight and anybody who doesnt know me as a celebrity and meets me and is getting to know me, after a couple of months when I mention my sexuality, its like 'oh, you like guys?'

"Theres still this process of having to come out. It doesnt stop."

But the actor had an inspiring message for young bisexuals.

He told them: "I would say just know for a fact that when you see all of these beautiful, incredible, wonderful LGBTQ people visibly and publicly, know that there are even more bisexual men that are exactly like you, that you are 100% perfect the way you are, and that if you want to see more people you identify with and relate to, be that person.

"Be out and be visible and know that youre perfect the way you are. You dont need to question your sexuality."

Daniel's message of support comes after his coronavirus scare on his return from partying at the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.
