THE Walking Dead's Michael Traynor has claimed fans had pitchforks and torches coming to kill him after his character's brutal betrayal.

The actor played Nicholas in the hit AMC show during the fifth and sixth seasons.

His character - a cowardly survivor of Alexandria - became something of an antagonist for fan-favourite Glenn [Steven Yeun] and ended up causing Glenn's apparent death in season six.

Michael, 44, previously said the fans "had pitchforks and torches coming to kill" him and during a chat with Skybound's Talk Dead to Me podcast he added: "That hiatus, in-between the end of [Season] 5 and to the beginning of [Season] 6, was a lot of fun."

In the season five finale - called Conquer - Nicholas attacked Glenn and left him to die.

Recalling the storyline, Michael said: "I knew the job of Nicholas wasnt to be this cuddly, affable, super-charming individual, which is kind of how I lead my own life, thanks a lot.

"So when people would come up and say, 'Hey man, I f***ing hate you,' I would hear, 'Great job, you hit the target.'"

But that wasn't the end of things for Nicholas and Glenn, as in series six episode called Thank You, the two men found themselves cornered by a pack of walkers.

Nicholas shot himself in the head to avoid being eaten alive, but his corpse caused Glenn to topple into the zombies below.

While it was revealed a few weeks later that Glenn had actually survived, Michael continued: "That was funny because people came up to me just screaming like, 'Wheres Glenn? What happened? Whats happening to you?'

"Id be at the checkout stand at a grocery store, and theyd be like, 'Paper or plastic and what happened to Glenn?'

"[I'd say], 'I brought my own bag, no spoilers.' So that was really fun.

"And there were people that were the thing is, folks were so involved in the show and rightly so the storylines were so compelling those three weeks in-between, people were just so fanatically wanting the answer, and I thought that was an amazing testament to [the shows popularity]."

The Walking Dead returns for the second part of season 10 on February 23rd in the USa and on February 24th on Fox and Now TV.
