The Walking Dead Will Start Bringing Back Dead Characters In A Strange Way – Forbes

The Walking Dead

Scott Gimple has done a sprawling, multi-part interview with EW where new bits of it keep coming out every day. I already covered his rather lackluster update about the state of the Rick Grimes movie, which does not seem particularly far along, but a new bit from a more recent chunk of the interview caught my eye.

Its about potentially bringing back dead characters from the series, though perhaps not in the ways youre imagining, as in, so and so isnt actually as dead as you think they are, or they show up in a dream sequence or something. Rather, Gimple has another plan instead.

"Im trying to get together a number of different things that we can show at different times during the year, and this focuses on characters we miss and we lost, Gimple said. Its awesome to be able to play with characters that weve lost, and its awesome to fill in some of the blanks."

The idea seems to be that there might be limited series that focus on the backstories of dead characters. Weve heard previous rumors about filling in backstories with say, a Negan movie, which Jeffrey Dean Morgan is dying to do, as it even has a basis in the comics, but this is something else.

The idea here would be for mini-arcs for different dead characters from the series. And I have a few ideas about who this would and wouldnt work for already.

Abraham Ford To me, this strikes me as the most likely option, as there have been rumors about Abraham showing up on Fear in the past already, and actor Michael Cudlitz is still fully involved with the series as an active director. All hed need to do is dye his hair fiery red again.

The Walking Dead

Carl Grimes I first found this news item because Chandler Riggs shared it with the eyes emoji, and yet Carl seems an unlikely candidate for this. Why? Because weknow his entire story. His story was The Walking Deads story, and the only time we dont see him is before the pilot. And clearly Riggs is too old to play a nine year-old version of himself now. So I cant see this working, even if I know Riggs misses being on the show.

Tyreese and Sasha While the actors are busy on The Expanse and Star Trek respectively, I could see this potentially working as there seems to be a story to tell before we meet Tyreese and Sasha in season 3.

Glenn Rhee In theory, yes, theres definitely a story about Glenn before he meets Rick when hes in Atlanta. And yet in practice, I have a feeling it would be hard for AMC to convince Steven Yeun to return for this concept, as he didnt seem terribly thrilled about being killed off, and has moved on to other, bigger projects. Hard to see him returning.

Shane and Lori Again, theres possibly some sort of story to tell here about what happened with them when Rick was in a coma, but actor availability would be a problem here (Jon Bernthal is like an A-list movie star at this point) and the young Chandler Riggs problem would exist, as Carl would have to be part of the story.

The Walking Dead

Merle Dixon I would definitely watch a Merle and Daryl prequel, especially if we could get Norman Reedus to cut his hair for it.

The Governor This has been rumored for quite a while now, but Id be a little surprised if they went all the way back to a dead villain from five seasons ago at this point.

Beth Greene I miss Beth a lot and agree that she should have never been killed. And yet I dont see how the show could return to her story in the past without Herschel, as actor Scott Wilson has passed away.

In short, its kind of hard to see this concept working for more than one or two characters, frankly. Abraham seems like kind of a shoe-in, but besides that, its a little hard to see who else would fit for the concept, but well see if this ever comes to pass.
