The Walking Deads Aaron actor lifts lid on secret Jesus romance which was never shown on screen – The Sun

ROMANCE is hard to come by on The Walking Dead.

Its fair to say the zombie apocalypse isnt the ideal setting for courtship, but that hasnt stopped show bosses from matchmaking a diverse array of couples over the last ten series of carnage.

However, one fledgling relationship that never made it to the screen was between Aaron (Ross Marquand) and Jesus (Tom Payne).

Jesus, one of the shows handful of LGBTQ characters, was killed off last season after The Whisperers disguised themselves in a pack of walkers.

At the time Aaron was shaken by the loss, with scenes leading up to the moment showing the pair becoming closer than ever.

Aaron had suffered his fair share of loss, having previously lost partner Eric (Jordan Woods-Robinson) to an attack by The Saviours.

Marquan opened up about how Aaron found solace in Jesus after his heartbreak when asked about their relationship by fans.

"I think it was kind of alluded to, in points. Tom Payne and I, we discussed [it], and we thought they probably were romantic at some point during the six-year time jump, he explained at Comic Con Paris.

He noted that the pair had a huge amount in common given their roles in their respective camps of Alexandria and Hilltop.

"We didn't know how that was going to look, exactly, but we sort of alluded to it. We decided it only made sense, because of their camaraderie, and they're very similar. They're both the recruiters for their respective communities, they have a lot in common, he went on.

Aaron has taken on a decidedly darker attitude in season 10, following the loss of Jesus.

Marquand admitted that a thirst for revenge has started to manifest in the character and noted that Aaron was starting to lose hope when it comes to love.

"When he loses Jesus in the cemetery with all the Whisperers, I think it just destroys him, he went on.

"Because everybody he gets close to, they just end up dying horribly. That's the show, though. You love to watch all these people, 'Oh, heres some hope,' and then [they die]."

Elsewhere in the panel, he praised show bosses for keeping viewers on their toes by diverting from the Robert Kirkman comics upon which The Walking Dead was based.

"I think that [TWD chief content officer] Scott Gimple and [showrunner] Angela Kang took as much as they could from the source material to honour it, but they wanted to make sure it was different enough so that readers of the comic, like myself, wouldnt know what was going to happen every single step of the way, he gushed.

"I think it's really important to keep an audience surprised every week, and thats what I love. In the comics, it's Rick and Abraham that discover Aaron. And [in the show], of course its Maggie and Sasha.

"People get taken out of certain storylines, added to certain storylines, and I love that, because it stays true to what the comic is all about, but also keeps everything very exciting and fresh for the viewers, I think."
