‘TV’s Top 5’: Netflix’s Bombshell and Why ‘Walking Dead’ Is Ending – Hollywood Reporter

During this episode, hosts Daniel Fienberg and Lesley Goldberg break down a busy week of news and welcome the creator and showrunner of Netflix's 'Teenage Bounty Hunters' to the show.

Welcome to another episode ofTV's Top 5,The Hollywood Reporter's TV podcast.

Every week, hostsLesley Goldberg(West Coast TV editor) andDaniel Fienberg(chief TV critic) break down the latest TV news with context from the business and critical sides, welcome showrunners, executive and other guests and provide a critical guide of what to watch (or skip, as the case may be). This week's five topics are:

1. Netflix's executive bombshell.

Cindy Holland, the woman who helped transform the streamer from its DVD-by-mail roots to the most Emmy-nominated outlet ever, was pushed out as co-CEO Ted Sarandos promoted Bela Bajaria to head global television. In a week (and year) filled with landscape-shifting executive changes, this is the one nobody expected. This segment looks at the why behind the change and also explores the latest changes at NBCUniversal.

2. It's the end of two eras.

AMC's The Walking Dead AND E!'s Keeping Up With the Kardashians both announced this week that they would end with their upcoming seasons. Both shows are easily multibillion-dollar franchises. This segment explores why both are ending, the chances of Kim K. and co. will return and the roadblocks that may exist if and that's a big if the famous family was to take the series elsewhere.

3. The Mayor of Television holds court.

FX CEO John Landgraf this week became one of the few executives to spend time with the press corps during a Zoom call with reporters that focused on the cabler's inclusion efforts, return to production and, yes, the confusion that comes from "FX on Hulu."

4. Showrunner Spotlight.

Kathleen Jordan joins the show this week to discuss her Netflix series, Teenage Bounty Hunters. The first-time showrunner opens up about how the spec she wrote as a writing sample to get staffed on Jenji Kohan's American Princess led to the Netflix series produced by the Orange Is the New Black creator and its parallels to current events.

5. Critic's Corner.

As usual, every episode ends with Dan's look at what to watch (or skip). This week, he weighs in on HBO's We Are Who We Are, Coastal Elites and Third Day as well as The Dutchess on Netflix.
