Who is Jeffrey Grimes, and could he possibly appear inThe Walking Dead? Even though Andrew Lincolnhas now left the role, Rick Grimes remains the overarching protagonist ofThe Walking Dead. The original Robert Kirkman comic books charted Rick's journey from the start of the zombie apocalypse to his death in the Commonwealth and then promptly ended. On TV, the story has continuedafter Rick's disappearance, but Lincoln is confirmed to return for a Rick-centricThe Walking Dead movie, and his survival was recently hinted at in the currently-delayed season 10, ensuring Rick remains a key part of the franchise.

The Walking Dead has always had a brutal reputation and a high turnover in terms of cast, with very few originals still remaining, but the past few seasons have seen most main characters depart. Carl was killed off in season 8, Rick disappeared in season 9, and now Danai Gurira's Michonne has left the series. Lauren Cohan took a break as Maggie, but has thankfully now returned. However,combine those losses with the deaths of Jesus, Sayid and Tara, Morgan and Dwight crossing over toFear The Walking Dead and the highly likely deaths of Gabriel and Ezekiel in the near future, andThe Walking Dead is certainly in need of fresh meat.

Rick's brother is briefly mentioned in the original comic series as the one responsible forbringing together Rick and Lori, but Jeffrey Grimes doesn't actually appear until the short spinoff,The Walking Dead: The Alien. Set right at the beginning of the zombie apocalypse, Jeffrey is some years younger than Rick and is travelling in Spain when the outbreak starts. Jeffrey learns that Rick is in a coma after being shot, and tries to fly back to the US, only to bedenieddue to the quarantine grounding all flights. Unlike Rick Grimes, Jeffrey is not a natural survivor, and doesn't take particularly well to the end of the world. He's bitten by walkers before his brother even wakes up.

While Jeffrey dies in the same issue he makes his debut, he does encounter and befriend a fellow survivor, Claudia, who is more capable in the new, violent world. Claudia tries to help Jeffrey, but ultimately has to put him down before he turns into one of the undead. Before his demise, however, Jeffrey gives Claudia a message to take to his older brother, andThe Alien ends with the woman promising to head to America, find Rick and deliver the message. Strangely, Claudia is never seen again, not in a spinoff or the main comic series.

Considering Rick has never mentioned his brother on TheWalking Dead's TV series, it would feel like a jarring retcon if the character were to suddenly turn up after 10 seasons, but the upcoming Rick Grimes movie does offer an opportunity to explore Rick's past life in more detail. Given what is currently knownabout Rick's disappearance and how close his boat was to Oceanside at some point, there must've beensomething that meant so much to Rick, he delayed going back to his family in Alexandria. Could it have been Jeffrey? With his younger brother travelling the world, Rick probably never thought he would ever see Jeffrey again and didn't bother mentioning him to his fellow survivors (on-screen at least), but if the CRM have access to helicopters, they probably have long-range communication, meaning Rick could've put a message out to find his brother in Barcelona.

Despite the new possibilities Rick's movie presents, Jeffrey himself is still an unlikely inclusion inThe Walking Dead, but Claudia's chancesare far better. Claudia's fate is one of the few unresolved plot threadsThe Walking Dead's comic series didn't see through, but the TV series can correct that. It might be outlandish for Jeffrey Grimes to come knocking on the gate of Alexandria so late in the story, but the introduction of Claudia, a messenger with news from Rick's late brother, isn't much stranger than Morgan trekking halfway across the country to join up with theFear The Walking Dead crew and bumping into Dwight. Claudia inThe Walking Dead could add a new protagonist with deep ties to Rick Grimes, maintaining his presence on the show while simultaneously bringing in a fresh face and resolving a dangling comic plot thread.
