Walking Dead’s David Morrissey on why Governor made that decision – Digital Spy

The Walking Dead spoilers for seasons three and four follow.

David Morrissey feels The Governor was justified in one of his more horrific decisions in The Walking Dead.

The star of ITV's upcoming political drama The Singapore Grip was one of the most notorious villains from The Walking Dead's early seasons, as the twisted leader of the Woodbury community.

The Governor was a man of many dark secrets, not least of which was that he kept his zombified daughter Penny chained up in his home as a way to essentially preserve her in some form.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy about his time on The Walking Dead, Morrissey explained that he actually empathised with The Governor's highly-questionable devotion to his dead daughter.

"I loved the character," he said. "I found the character a very complex and weird person in the sense that he would do things which would shock you in their violence, but also they would shock you in his kindness and in his compassion that you would go, 'Oh, I wouldn't think he would ever do that.'

"And even to the point where he kept his daughter alive and people thought that was really weird and I thought that was really understandable, that this man would keep his daughter alive even though she'd gone over to the dark side.

"He loved her and why wouldn't he keep her? And those complexities and weird surprising turns of character are what I loved about him."

Morrissey has expressed hopes of getting to explore the events leading up to Penny's turn "to the dark side" someday, as he has pitched ideas for a return to The Walking Dead universe.
