Peoplewould expect vampires to be the least of their worries come winter days but in Alaska, the winter solstice is so bad that there are months where the sun doesn't shine. As expected, that's a field day for vampires much to the horror of one small Alaskan town.

As such,30 Days of Nightis a horror movie unlike any other and takes itself seriously. It's a town survival in pitch-black darkness where humans are killed by the dozen. No nonsense here and it has more respectable characters than most other films in its subgenre.

Kathy Bates gives her most haunting performance yet in this Stephen King adaptation of the same name. It follows the misfortune of a famous book author who gets into an accident and got luckily rescued by a fan.

The bad news is that she is his "number one fan" and she doesn't want him to leave. So she does everything she can to keep the author from leaving; this includes everything from injuring him further to killing some snoops. Let the Right One In,theSwedishoriginal, is also about vampires in the middle of winter but it's less primal than30 Days of Nightand focuses more on a drama between two friends. One of them is a human and the other is a vampire, and both are kidswith the latterbeing a serial murderer in their local town.

Tensions ensue after the vampire, named Eli, reveals her true self to Oskar, her human friend. It just so happens that Oskar is a bullied kid and Eli's loyalty to him makes matters more complicated as her violent nature wrestles with her more sensible side. Make no mistake, it's still a horror moviefirst and foremost.

The Thingis a classic that's probably never going to get masterfully remade with the same level of cultural impact. It starts with a scientific expedition team in remote Antarctica where the researchers got more than they signed up for after a weird creature that can shapeshift started attacking their camps.

So now they're stuck with each other and the creature, paranoia mounting up and suspicions arising as they try to determine which of them is an impostor out to kill the others.

The Shiningis a perfect example of why being cooped up in a mansion inn is bound to make anyone restless. Of course, several factors are included such as the whole site being built on top of a haunted Native American ritual area.

The result is a whole family's retreat gone wrong with the patriarch, Jack, getting possessed by the malevolent spirits of the place and going rogue against his family. Jack's slow-burn descent into madness brews up until it reaches a boiling point come winter where the film culminates into an exhilarating cat-and-mouse chase in and out of the snow-covered hotel.
