CLEVELAND By now, you've probably seen photos on social media of a celebrity or "influencer" posing proudly with a face full of blood!

No, it's not part of a Halloween costume. In fact, the "Vampire Facial" is a cutting-edge skincare treatment that promises to plump skin, reduce fine lines and pore size and even counteract sun damage.

First popularized by Kim Kardashian back in 2013, this extreme-looking treatment has only grown in popularity - and now you can try it right here in Northeast Ohio.

3News Special Correspondent Emily Mayfield has been a fan of the treatment for some time now, offering her followers on her social media accounts an inside look at the beauty trend.

And now, she's taking us along for the ride.

So what exactly is the Vampire Facial, and why does your face bleed during the treatment? According to Dr. Jakleen Labbad, owner of Revital Med Spa, where Emily receives her treatments, the treatment involves a tiny, pulsing needle - also known as a micro-needling, and the application of PRP.

"PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma," explained Dr. Labbad. "It is part of the serum [in your own blood]...and has white blood cells and platelets."

And as for the benefits?

"It treats fine lines and wrinkles, it helps with skin texture, it improves pore size, and generally, it just plumps the skin and gives you a nice, beautiful glow," Dr. Labbad told Emily before her treatment.

If you're wondering if it's considered safe, The Cleveland Clinic says the Vampire Facial is generally considered safe, though it is not suitable for people with certain blood clotting disorders and skin conditions.

You should always consult your doctor before receiving treatment.

But it's not exactly cheap. Prices start around $600 per treatment, and can cost as much as $1,200 in some cases.

When it came time for Emily's treatment, Dr. Labbad first applied a numbing cream to Emily's face. Then, the Revital team drew blood from Emily's arm and used a special machine to separate the PRP from her blood.

Once her face was numb, about thirty minutes later, it was time to start the facial.
