Avengers: Blade Reveals One Place He Hates More Than Hell (For Good Reason) – CBR – Comic Book Resources

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Avengers #27 by Jason Aaron, Ed McGuinness, Mark Morales, Jason Keith and Cory Petit, on sale now.

Marvel's chief vampire hunter, Blade, has been established as a quietly powerful warrior, using his status as a half-vampire to great use during his time with the Avengers. Working with the team, he's been forced to combat Celestials, Dark Elves and even ventured into Hell itself. While that certainly wasn't a fun experience, it looks like he's just found a place he hates even more.

During his time with Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Blade has largely been able to stay away from space. However, that changes in Avengers #27, and Blade's first intergalactic adventure with the team leads him head-on towards a red sun, which is revealed to be his greatest weakness.

Since Blade was created by Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan in Tomb of Dracula #10, he's never been like other vampires. While Blade's mother was giving birth to him, she was attacked and killed by the vampire Deacon Frost almost a century ago. However, Blade's mother still passed certain vampiric attributes down to Blade, such as an extended life that he dedicated to the art of hunting down vampires. These abilities would only be increased later in life during an encounter with Morbius the Living Vampire where he was bitten again. He gained several vampiric attributes including enhanced strength, speed, senses and a minor healing factorthat warded off most infections and forms of illness or poison. Although he still had a sense of blood-lust, he was able to develop the willpower to successfully fight it. He received all this along with an immunity to sunlight, vampires' traditional weakness, which gave him the unofficial title of the Daywalker.

But now, it seems like those perks are working against him on the Avengers' current mission into the cosmos to answer a call for help from Shi'Ar space. He was already hesitant to go on the mission, and it seems like his vampiric senses might have been right on the money. When the team got separated, Blade ended up alongside Ghost Rider and Black Widow in Ghost Rider's Hell-Charger, being chased by the Silver Surfer.

However, the drive isn't going well for Blade. Despite his immunity typical sunlight, being this far away from Earth has introduced Blade to a new kind of sun - namely, a red one. This has a direct and immediate effect on Blade, leaving him in great pain as his body begins to smoke.

Like another comic character who has their abilities connected directly with the sun, it's apparent that different kinds of sunlight can have a direct effect on Blade. While Superman merely loses his powers in red sunlight, Blade might be outright killed if they don't escape in time. As if interstellar travel throughout the Marvel Universe wasn't already dangerous enough, Blade is in the race of his life, and his team is being pursued by one of Marvel's fastest cosmic beings.
