Crowdfunding Round-Up: MOURNING FRANKIE, MIXED and 3 more projects we love – The Beat – Comics Beat

Welcome to The Beats crowdfunding round-up: a collection of some of our favorite campaigns from the week including one-shots, on-goings, anthologies and everything in-between! This week were checking out the vampire/romance comic Mourning Frankie, the next set of graphic novels from Frdric Brrmaud and Federico Bertolucci and more.

Lets get started!

Creators: Antoinette Davis (author)Goal: $540End date: January 9, 2021Goodies: Pledge $5 for a digital copy, $10 for a physical copy, or go higher for short comics, prints, and more.

A comic on vampires, Filipino Americans and succumbing to villainy, because its the monsters who have more fun.

Mourning Frankie is a horror/romance story following a newly-turned vampire named Frankie and the notorious Marlon Guinto. Theyre a nonbinary Filipino American who, after sending out some thirst-tweets directed at fictional vampires, is willingly embraced and tasked with dealing with a group of local hunters. Davis previous work includes the Webtoon series, Rite, and the upcoming visual novel Into the Fen. This first issue in a new series will be 36-pages of black and white art, and you can check out a preview over on the campaign page.

Creators: Mushki ArtsGoal: $400End date: January 9, 2021Goodies: The physical book is $20 and comes with 3 stickers; higher pledges include posters, prints and if youre fast! original artwork.

A comic about my experience growing up mixed indigenous and dealing with colonial culture.

Mixed is a story about growing up as a mixed native, created by a Cherokee/Polish author. Over on the campaign page, backers can get an idea of what this entails: feelings of inadequacy, and fear, being bullied for talking about indigenous heritage, but having white skin. The final product will be a hand-bound, 35-page comic (plus fold-out pages!), featuring Mushkis evocative, flowing art style. For more, head over to the campaign page, then keep an eye for this to reach backers in February 2021.

A comic exploring frowns, nature and mindfulness.

A Walk with the Sad Thing is a remake and expansion of Piles 2015 comic, The Sad Thing, a story examining sadness and how to cope with it. Work is already underway on the project as shows on the campaign page and looks like an incredible start. The black and white is being replaced with blue washes, crisp lines, and touches of warm oranges and reds. A Walk with the Sad Thing will be size A5, 24-pages, and each copy will be hand signed. Look for it next March.

The first collected edition of the horror webcomic by Michael Walsh.

Comeback co-creator Michael Walsh is making his dreams a reality or rather, his nightmares. Recently, Walsh began illustrating his nightmares and posting them on Twitter. It caught on quickly, and he began creating more and more, to the point where we are now, that he has enough content to turn it into a black and white comic collecting the first 26 stories, as well as 5 brand-new, Kickstarter exclusive stories, totaling up to 32-pages, with the potential of more in the form of stretch goals.

Creators: Frdric Brrmaud (writer), Federico Bertolucci (illustrator)Goal: $7,500End date: January 7, 2021Goodies: Digital copies are $9 and $15, hardcovers are $20 and $30, and higher pledges include retail bundles, box sets, and more.

Two new graphic novels by the award-winning team of Frdric Brrmaud & Federico Bertolucci! Exclusive variant cover by Ben Caldwell!

This campaign is not for one, but two brand-new graphic novels: Brindille and Love: The Mastiff. The first is a 192-page dark fantasy fairy tale that the creators describe as a bit of a riff on Alice in Wonderland. On the other hand, youve got The Mastiff, an outback adventure featuring a canine protagonist left alone after his owner is attacked by a poisonous snake. It continues the Love series of wildlife graphic novels, and weighs in at 88-pages. Look for one or both of these titles to hit your mailbox in May of 2021.
