Legacies: All About Wickery, the TVD Universe’s Morbidly Named Answer to Quidditch – CBR – Comic Book Resources

Legacies featured the game of Wickery in its pilot, which is a half-hearted version of Quidditch and a macabre homage to The Vampire Diaries.

When Legacies, the spin-off ofThe Vampire Diariesfranchise, took off in 2018, its pilot episode carried many Easter eggs as a nod to its predecessors. One of them is also a reference to the widely celebrated world of Harry Potter withthe game of Wickery played at the Salvatore Boarding School, which is a cross between American Football and Quidditch.

In the Harry Potter saga, Quidditch is a popular sport played on broomsticks between opposing teams. In the game, there are four balls: one Quaffle, two Bludgers and the Golden Snitch. The game is played by two teams of seven players each, featuring three Chasers, two Beaters, the Keeper and the Seeker.

The Beaters protect the Keeper while they are gaining points by putting the Quaffle through the ring-shaped goals, placed on each end of the pitch. Meanwhile, the enchanted Bludgers keep trying to unseat them. Finally, the Seeker tries to locate and catch the Golden Snitch, whose capture wins the respective team 150 points and ends the game. The winner is the team with the highest score.

The game of Wickery is a rather watered-down version of Quidditch, as explained by Lizzie in the pilot ofLegacies. The game, "invented" by Caroline and Alaric Saltzman when Lizzie and Josie were ten, has a football thrown from one player to another. Every player here has some power, like super strength, speed or telekinesis. These are used as an advantage by each team to get the ball through a single golden hoop that materializes mid-air.

In Legacies version of Quidditch, the Bludgers have been replaced with players with heightened strength, and they are allowed to knock out others. The Golden Snitchs concept has been done away with while the Quaffle has been included. The winner is the team that manages to get the maximum goals by jumping through the aerial hoop with the ball. Instead of the six goal posts fitted onto long poles stuck in the ground, Wickery only has one hoop.

As for the fact that Quidditch is played on flying broomsticks, Lizzie explains that one of her classmates made a broom fly in class. When it was put to practice, it failed with the player sitting falling 30 feet. So, "real-life Quidditch remains an elusive pipe dream," in Legacies, not that it is played much on the series either way.
