In Magic: The Gathering, the Church of Avacyn protects Innistrad's humanity from the monsters. It's a hybrid church and army of light.

In the lore of Magic: The Gathering, the forces of good and evil wage their eternal battle across the Multiverse in planes as diverse as the mystic Kamigawa,themetal realm of Mirrodinand the metropolis of Ravnica. But the clash of light and dark is most acute on the shadowy plane of Innistrad, where the monsters of the night do battle with the Church of Avacyn.

Humanity has always been on the bottom of the food chain on Innistrad, where savage werewolves and aristocratic vampires prey on the helpless townsfolk. But in theprovince of Gavony, there is hope: the mighty Church of Avacyn is ready to fight back, and it has the tools to do so.

The Church of Avacyn's origins are a total mystery to most people on Innistrad, and they would be shocked to learn the truth. Over a thousand years ago, Edgar Markov created vampire-kind to feed on humanity and offset a dreadful famine, but the vampires got carried away, upsetting the balance on the plane.

In response, Sorin Markov used advanced interplanar magic to create the archangel Avacyn.Humanity built an entire church around her,which kept growing as the years passed. Avacyn became humanity's number one protector and the strongest fighter in the entire Church, and most Church leaders defer to her and pray for her protection against vampires, werewolves, vengeful geists and lab-grown skaabs.

By the era of Jace Beleren, Chandra and other planeswalkers, the Church has become a well-established theocracy, governing and protecting humanity at the same time. Mostof Innistrad's laws are rooted in the Church of Avacyn, and its leaders go a long way towards guiding and protecting humanity -- as well as dispensing justice of all kinds.

The Church's enforcers, the cathars and knights, use holy magic to fight back against the monsters, and the angels themselves act as aerial support to smite the most powerful demons. Villagers and townsfolk pray at local parishes and roadsign shrines for protection, and angelic wards can help keep remote towns and villages safe. Equipment such as holy water, silver blades, wooden stakes and pendants shaped like Avacyn's collar (an upside-down Omega) also help.
