The Strain: "The Born" Breed Of Vampire Explained | Screen Rant – Screen Rant

Here's The Strain's rare breed of vampire "The Born" explained. Guillermo del Toro launched his career with low-budget horror movie Cronos in 1993, which was a unique take on the vampire myth. He was later hired for comic book movie sequel Blade II, which pit Wesley Snipes' hunter and a pack of vampires against a parasitic new breed dubbed The Reapers. These feral creatures are borderline unkillable, and even developed bone over their hearts to prevent staking.

Guillermo del Toro's fondness for reinventing bloodsuckers came to a crescendo with The Strain franchise. This series started as a trilogy of novels - The Strain, The Fall, and The Night Eternal - which del Toro co-authored with Chuck Hogan (The Town). The Strain was later developed as a TV series idea, and the success of the books later spawned a show that debuted in 2014. The series wasn't a strict adaptation of the novels and changed the timeline of current events and the fates of key characters. Overall, The Strain was a solid horror show, though early seasons suffered somewhat due to the sheer unlikeability of several main characters.

One character on The Strain who definitely rocked was Mr. Quinlan (Rupert Penry-Jones, Black Sails). Quinlan is a vampire who teams up with the show's human heroes to take down The Master, but while not technically human he's not fully a "strigoi" either. Around the time of Roman Emperor Caligula, The Master attacked a victim believing her to be a virgin, but not realizing she was with child. She managed to escape and later gave birth to Quinlan, but The Master's bite changed the baby in various ways.

One major difference between The Born - AKA Dhampirs - and other vampires is that Quinlan has no worms in his blood, which is the strigoi's primary method of infection. Like Blade, Quinlan is somewhat resistant to sunlight too, though it can still harm him in big enough doses. Still, The Strain's Born hybrids need blood to feed on to survive. No other half-breeds are encountered on the show, though Quinlan is apparently the fifth known dhampir in existence, and it's assumed the others have died out.

The Strain's Quinlan and Blade seem like they'd make good slaying buddies, as they both have similar origins and share most of the strengths of a vampire with few of their weaknesses. It's implied The Master's fear of The Born is due to the fact he can't directly control them, which is one reason he feared Quinlan and took steps to ensure pregnant women weren't feasted upon.

Its pronounced Paw-rick, not Pad-raig. Now thats out of the way, a brief introduction. Padraig has been writing about film online since 2012, when a friend asked if hed like to contribute the occasional review or feature to their site.A part-time hobby soon blossomed into a career when he discovered he really loved writing about movies, TV and video games he even (arguably) had a little bit of talent for it. He has written words for Den of Geek, Collider, The Irish Times and Screen Rant over the years, and can discuss anything from the MCU - where Hawkeye is clearly the best character - to the most obscure cult b-movie gem, and his hot takes often require heat resistant gloves to handle. He's super modern too, so his favorite movies include Jaws, Die Hard, The Thing, Ghostbusters and Batman. He can be found as i_Padds on Twitter making bad puns.
