The Vampire Diaries: 10 Events That Changed Everything – Screen Rant

The Vampire Diaries was chock-full of twists and turns throughout it's story, but what major events completely changed the game for the show?

With several plot twists during its run,The Vampire Diaries did not hold back in creatinginteresting situations and stand-out moments. Big reveals and events existed for more than shock value. Many moments actively changed the way fans looked at the show and filled in blanks about the world's history. And, some of the show's most significant moments held repercussions that changed everything for the main characters.

Without villains like Klaus and Katherine, many of the show's most prominent events, and what occurred in retaliation to those, would not have happened.Overall, there are certain key events throughout the series that changed the course of history for all of the characters.

There may not be a show without the events of 1864. When Katherine stays at the Salvatore family's home, she involves herself with Stefan and Damon. Getting each brother to fall for her, Katherine strings them along.

Toward the end of her visit, Katherine has each brother ingest her blood, and when they both die, the Salvatore brothers wake up in transition. Still, there's one big plot twist left. Stefanconvinces Damon to transition after Damon initially decides not to become a vampire. Their conflicts in 1864 set off Damon's decision to give Stefan an eternity of misery.

Of all the Mikaelson siblings, Henrik may be the least remembered. He doesn't have much of a role, but his death was the catalyst that leads tothe creation of the vampire race. Henrik was killed by a werewolf, leading Mikael to ask his wife, Esther, to create a creature more powerful than werewolves to protect their family.

Thus, the Original Vampire, along with the Original Hybrid, was invented.

Elena had been at the center of plenty of supernatural phenomena by the season three finale. Elena, one of the few remaining human main characters, faces a major change after drowning with Damon's blood in her system. After a close call of wondering if she would survive the transition at all, Elena completes the transformation into a vampire.

With heightened senses, intense emotions, andthe sire bond, there is a lot of drama linked to Elena being a vampire. It also is a significant force behind the search for the cure.

Caroline becoming a vampire was one of the most significant changes the show included, and it was the start of massive character development for Caroline.

Becoming a vampire meant that Caroline got to be more involved in the supernatural occurrences in Mystic Falls. She became an integral part of the team and, with her vampire abilities, could defend herself from enemies. Caroline also showed she could control her desire for blood and helped Stefan with his addiction as well.

AsThe Vampire Diaries was known to bring back characters from the dead all the time, killing Elena would have been far too simple. Instead, Kai Parker takes it a step further. To keep Elena asleep, Kai links Elena's life to Bonnie's, with the intention of it being an unbreakable curse.

Initially, the only way for the spell to break is for Elena to wake up when Bonnie dies. Elena's sleeping spell gives Bonnie's friendship with Damon higher stakes, and on a narrative level, the series had to be reformatted due to the absence of a central character.

Breaking the bind on his werewolf side officially lets Klaus access his full hybrid capabilities. It also leads Klaus on a journey to create a hybrid army. This was further explained to be the reason why Klaus was capable of procreating. Hayley becoming pregnant from Klaus was the event that eventually brought Klaus to New Orleans and was one of the essential original storylines forThe Originals.

Without having broken the werewolf bind, Klaus never would have had Hope and began the road for redemption.

After spending most of the first two seasons being considered the good brother, Stefan gets a chance to show his dark side. Stefan agrees to leave Mystic Falls with Klaus, but he must do things that he would never normally do in order to keep up his end of the deal.

Stefan's ripper and humanity-less sides are explored during the third season. But, it also sparks more drama in the love triangle between Stefan, Damon, and Elena. With Stefan gone, Elena works with Damon to find him and eventually grows closer to Damon.

When an Original Vampire dies, their entire sire line dies with them. The group originally learned this when Finn died and later used it to complete Jeremy's Hunter's mark. The mark grew every time Jeremy killed a vampire, so when he killed Kol (and thus every vampire in his line) the mark completed itself. It also becomes an essential reason why the group can't kill Klaus, as they come from his sire line.

The Originals also makes use of this storyline during its crossover withThe Vampire Diaries. Klaus's sire connection broke, ensuring that if Klaus were to die, the vampires connected to his sire line would continue to live.

One of the most massive plot twists involved Katherine's return to Mystic Falls at the end of season one. She then went on to be one of the central villains of season two. As a survivor, Katherine was often a few steps ahead of those who opposed her.

Each time Katherine returned, it was uncertain what role she would play, whose side she was on, or what she would do. Her return as the final antagonist in the series finale also created some game-changing moments, including Stefan's sacrifice.

With the huge role Doppelgngers play throughout the series, it is unlikely that would have occurred without Silas, Amara, and Qetsiyah. The Mikaelsons may have been the Original Vampires, but Silas and Amara were the first immortals. Silas fell in love with Amara but tricked Qetsiyah into believing he wanted to spend eternity with her.

When Qetsiyah realized Silas had betrayed her, Qetsiyah made Silas believe Amara was dead, and Silas chose to desiccate rather than take the cure and be separated from Amara forever. To keep the balance, nature created versions of Silas and Amara who could die, such as Katherine Pierce, Stefan Salvatore, and Elena Gilbert.
