The Vampire Diaries: 5 Times We Felt Bad For Bonnie (& 5 Times We Hated Her) – Screen Rant

Bonnie Bennett was one of the best characters in The Vampire Diaries. As the resident witch of Mystic Falls, Bonnie became incredibly important to most of the main cast. This wasn't just because of her magical abilities though, as Bonnie had a way of making everyone feel safe and welcomed.

Throughout the series, Bonnie endured a lot of challenges that were thrown her way, but she always came out on the other side, stronger than before. However, there was the odd occasion where Bonnie's actions caused unnecessary pain to those she loved, inciting fans to hit back at the popular character.

Somehow, it became a trend early on in The Vampire Diaries, that Bonnie almost always got a bum deal. Bonnie was probably the kindest and most selfless character in the show, and yet she always ended up paying a price higher than most.

In Season 1, Damon was desperate to rescue Katherine Pierce from a tomb of desiccated vampires. However, events turned awry and both Stefan and Damon were trapped inside. Sheila Bennett managed to get them out using magic but in doing so, she died.

This is a bit of an odd one, as Kai was the main antagonist for Season 6, and had done some truly awful things to Bonnie and her friends. He tried to kill both Bonnie and Damon, he left her alone in the Prison World, and was basically a massive psychopath.

However, after Kai had absorbed Luke's powers (killing Luke in the process), he started to develop empathy for the first time in his life, which made him an even more compelling villain. When Bonnie finally got her revenge, it deprived the viewers of seeing more of Kai, which was definitely a shame.

Viewers never really got to see much of Bonnie's father within the series. Come to think of it, they never got to see much of Bonnie's mother either. However, despite his brief appearance in the show, it was clear that the two had a fairly healthy relationship.

In Season 4, Bonnie's dad became Mayor of Mystic Falls after Carole Lockwood's untimely death. Considering that the role didn't have a high mortality rate, viewers knew Bonnie's dad would meet his end sooner rather than later, which devastated Bonnie.

Bonnie was always fairly mild-mannered in the show but she definitely had her moments. Season 7 was the first season not to feature Elena Gilbert as a series regular, and so the storylines became a little weird as they tried to adapt to this new change.

Basically, the ultimate vampire hunter arrived in Mystic Falls, with the sole intent of killing all vampires. However, due to unforeseen events, Bonnie eventually became the Huntress, causing her to chase down all of her vampire friends with the sole aim of killing them all.

When Bonnie was trapped in the Prison World initially, she at least had Damon for company. Actually, their banter leads to one of the cutest and best friendships in the latter half of the series. However, their happiness was short-lived.

Bonnie sent Damon away to prevent Kai from escaping his own personal prison reality, which proved to be a mistake. Kai got our regardless, leaving Bonnie on her own for what seemed like an eternity. One of the most heartbreaking scenes was watching Bonnie just completely give up on life.

Season 5 was a difficult one for Bonnie and Jeremy's relationship. First of all, Bonnie was dead for the first half of the season, and only Jeremy could see her. However, despite being able to communicate with Bonnie, Jeremy was still unable to touch her.

Bonnie finally came back as the anchor to the Other Side, which was great until the Other Side started to disappear, taking Bonnie with it. Jeremy fought so hard to save Bonnie, but she lied to him over the phone, forcing him to lose her all over again.

After Jeremy left The Vampire Diaries, Bonnie's dating life was forgotten about for a while, in favor of Bonnie and Damon's newfound friendship. However, sooner or later, Bonnie began to develop romantic feelings for her captor-turned-love interest, Enzo St. John.

Bonnie and Enzo's relationship was surprisingly sweet, and the two supernatural beings were absolutely perfect for each other. Unfortunately, they got on the wrong side of an emotionless Stefan, who punched a hole through Enzo's chest, leaving Bonnie completely broken.

By the beginning of Season 2, Bonnie had had just about enough of vampires. They were the reason why her grandma died, and why her best friends were severely injured in a car crash while Tyler was driving. Thankfully, everyone recovered from their injuries.

Except, of course, for Caroline, who was turned into a vampire by Katherine. When Bonnie found out that Caroline was a vampire, and that she had killed someone, she couldn't take it and abandoned her best friend when Caroline needed Bonnie the most.

This was one of Bonnie's most heartbreaking and memorable scenes in the entire show, and Kat Graham absolutely nailed her performance. During Season 7, Damon was seriously struggling with not being able to see Elena for the next 60 years or so.

In the end, Damon decided to just give up and desiccate slowly in a coffin until Elena woke up. However, this meant that he would never see Bonnie again, and he left her without saying goodbye. This deeply hurt Bonnie and turned her against Damon for the rest of the season.

In Season 6, it was announced that Nina Dobrev, who played Elena Gilbert, was leaving The Vampire Diaries. This was exciting and slightly disturbing news, as Elena was the star of the show, and fans didn't know how the show would go on without her.

Elena was written out of the series when Kai placed her in a magically induced coma. Elena would only wake up when Bonnie died. This was in no way Bonnie's fault, but given how easily Bonnie woke Elena up in Season 8, it makes one wonder whether she really tried her hardest to do so in Season 6.
