The vampire diaries became a huge hit among teens after it first premiered on September 10, 2009. The popular television series is based on the books by L.J. Smith of the same name. The series spanned over 8 seasons with no less than 171 episodes. The final season 8, was considered to be the last season. But the loose ends and dissatisfying gave fans hope that season 9, maybe in the making to give the characters of the show justice. The last episode of the show aired on March 10, 2017. Two years later fans are still expecting another season.

The show garnered a huge fan base among teens and adults, alike. The concept of horror, fantasy, and mystery added to the shows fame. It was nominated for several awards and has won some too.

The show became a media franchise, connecting comic books, spin-offs, and other series to its collection. The originals and the legacies are a part of it.

No release date has yet been released. The renewal of the show for season 9, has not been officially announced either. But fanatics have high hopes and are expecting that the makers of the show will officially announce the renewal for season 9 this year.

The previous seasons of the series were based in a fictional town, Mystic Falls. A town with a supernatural presence and a history of migrant settlement from the 18th century. The show revolved around a young named Elena Gilbert who falls in love with a 162-year-old vampire Stefan Salvatore. Complications arrive in their relationship when Stefans brother Damon Salvatore comes in the picture. The lead characters face different challenges throughout the series, including love, heartbreak, and much more. Fans speculate that season 9, of the series, will begin with a fresh introduction, and put the end of the characters into place.

The lead cast of the previous seasons included Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder, and Paul Wesley. But Nina left the show in season 5 and made a guest appearance in season 8. While Ian Somerhalder, in an interview clarified that even if the show was renewed for season 9, he wont be returning to the series. Now that these two characters are confirmed, that they might be not returning. Fans are hoping that Paul Wesley would return to their screens with some additional new faces.
