Caroline's mistakes were not always her fault, though. She often acted on impulse in order to protect her loved ones or made decisions during impossible situations. But whatever her shortcomings and failures, her friends and the fans loved her through and through. Here are the 10 worst things Caroline ever did, ranked.

Caroline was a victim of Damon Salvatore's compulsion and forced to do his bidding. One of the tasks he set for her was to retrieve the witch's amulet she'd given to Bonnie during a moment of anger. Caroline tried getting the amulet back by devious means, but Bonnie wouldn't let it go.

Eventually, out of desperation to complete the task and avoid Damon's ire, she made a grab for the amulet while Bonnie still wore it. Her friends didn't know what was wrong with her at the time, so Caroline looked bad.

When Katherine Pierce came back into town, she used Caroline to do her bidding, much like Damon before her. Scared and powerless to cross the evil Katherine, Caroline tried her hardest to make Elena break up with Stefan. She was afraid for her life, as Katherine threatened to kill her and everyone she loved if she didn't succeed at the task.

Desperate to stay alive and keep her mom safe, Caroline risked ruining her friendship with Elena by reiterating the inevitability of a failed relationship with Stefan.

In the first season of TVD, Caroline always had a snarky and stinging comment about Sheriff Liz Forbes's parenting skills. She was a moody teenager who blamed her mother for her parents' divorce. Though her father was only mentioned in passing for a long time, it seemed Caroline held more fondness for Bill Forbes than her mom.

She thought her mom spent too much time at work and never paid attention to her. Like any teenager that's hurting, she lashed out with hurtful words. Thankfully, things changed in later seasons.

Caroline as a human high schooler was filled with insecurity that caused her to be a bit of a bully. Her constant need to compare herself to Elena brought out the worst in her. Though Elena suffered a great loss and grieved her parents' death, Caroline still couldn't help but feel jealous of the attention Elena seemed to always get.

She was never outright rude to Elena, but at the beginning of the series she gave off some serious frenemy vibes. Bonnie's friendship saved Caroline from being a total mean girl.

When Sheriff Forbes learns that her daughterbecame one of the monsters she hunts, she is devastated. Caroline works with the Salvatore brothers to hold her mom hostage while the vervain drains from her system. She works to convince her mother that even though she is a vampire, she isn't a monster.

Liz eventually changes her mind, but Caroline knows that while her mom knows the truth she's in danger. She compels her mother to forget she and the Salvatores are vampires for the time being to ensure her friends' safety.

When Caroline first turned, she struggled to control her hunger. She tried to carry on like everything was normal, butwhen she nearly ripped Matt's throat out, she learned she couldn't handle the proximity.

Knowing that Matt hated her insecure flareups, Caroline pretended to be jealous of a classmate who was afterhim and confessed she'd never stop being jealous. Matt took that as a sign that she wasn't ready for their relationship and broke up with her. Ultimately, she did it to protect him, but it was a lie.

Soon after turning, Caroline's blood lust took control of her. Wandering a Mystic Falls carnival on her own, she found Carter, a carnival worker that smelled too good to resist. She gave in to her vampiric urges and sucked him dry. Ashamed and terrified of what she'd done, she tried to run away, but Damon stopped her.

He tried to kill her, but her friends came to her rescue. When Bonnie saw theguy she'd flirted with that night dead on the floor, something broke between her and Caroline.

The devastation of losing her mother to cancer put Caroline in a dark place. She decided to turn off her humanity switch for a while and live without the pain. Her friends tried to stop her, but she didn't listen to reason.

As her friends meddled and tried to turn her humanity back on, she lashed out and forced Stefan to join her on the dark side. Caroline knew this would bring out the Ripper, the side of Stefan he dreaded. But she wanted a little revenge on him.

While her humanity was off, Caroline exacted revenge on her meddling friends by compelling the innocent bystander Liam. She recruited him to perform surgery on Sarah, the last living relative of the Salvatore bloodline. This was the act that forced Stefan to turn off his humanity at her behest.

Caroline showed her sadistic side when she made a freshman medical student cut into an innocent girl without anesthesia. It was all because Stefan and company wouldn't let her run rampant without her humanity.

As popular as the Klaroline ship is, it can't be denied that it's messed up. Klaus turned her boyfriend Tyler into a hybrid, tormented him and hunted him down for his treacherous acts against his sire. Caroline and Tyler broke up because of Klaus's interference in their relationship.

His last act against Tyler was to kill his mother. Despite all this, Caroline gave in to her desire, seeing a softer side to Klaus. Admittedly, it wasn't one of her finer moments. But it did set off a flurry of delicious fanfic.
