Debuting in 2009 on The CW, The Vampire Diaries debuted with impressive numbers and eventually ran over eight seasons and spawned two direct spin-offs on The Originals and Legacies.

Unable to cope with the pain, Elena turned to the newly turned original vampire, Alaric (Matt Davis) and asked that he purge himself of knowing that he once loved Damon in The Vampire Diaries.

After some hiccups, in The Vampire Diaries season 6 episode 20, Id leave my home happy for you, Elena was finally able to consume it. With Damon by her side, Elena got everything she had wanted since she became a vampire.

In addition to making her human, the cure also had an additional side effect. Similar to when a human becomes a vampire, the transition serves to break each and every past compulsion in The Vampire Diaries.

As such, Alarics previous efforts were undone and Elenas memories of Damon were restored, beginning with the charmingly awkward first official date the two shared on The Vampire Diaries.

The return of Elenas memories (and the true depth of love they shared) served as the icing on the cake to their relationship. The restoration of Elenas memories remained one of The Vampire Diaries many emotional moments.
