"The Vampire Diaries" Was Dark, But These 26 Moments Took It Too Far – BuzzFeed

I'm still crying over some of these.

This was absolutely BRUTAL. Alaric FINALLY got his happy ending (after dying multiple times and losing his loved ones) and then IN THE MIDDLE OF HIS WEDDING, his soon-to-be-wife was murdered in front of him. What's worse, she was pregnant!! Luckily the babies were transferred to Caroline (lol what was that subplot) and grew up to star on Legacies BUT WE DIDN'T KNOW THAT HERE!!

Jeremy's death was really brutal, especially because at first it looked like Bonnie might be able to reverse it like she had in the past. But seeing Elena lose hope and realize her last remaining family was gone was utterly heartbreaking.

In her last moments, she tried to save Elena by stopping the ritual, but it didn't work. It was horrible to see Elena lose her caretaker after already having lost both her parents.

I. SOBBED. Liz dying from cancer was SO HORRIBLE especially because the vampires could do nothing about it. I HATED that Caroline didn't get to say a true goodbye!

Caroline was always the strongest character, and seeing her break down in front of Elena was so hard. Even though this scene was about Elena trying to convince Caroline not to turn off her humanity, it felt so emotionally resonant for any of us who have lost someone we love.

Stefan and Elena used a goodbye letter her mom had left her to try to get Caroline's humanity back, but then Caroline let Stefan destroy it. When her humanity came back later and she realized what she'd done, she was horrified and so was I!!!!!

Poor Bonnie had kept this secret for months to protect her friends, but in the end the truth had to come out. When all her friends realized that she hadn't been ignoring them and had actually been dead for months, their reactions broke my heart. Especially Matt's!

With all of the vampires' lives in the balance, Elena had to make the choice of who to see one last time. She chose Stefan and her friends, but when Damon asked who she would've chosen between just him and Stefan, she told him her love for Stefan eclipsed anything she felt for him. After a season of Damon/Elena buildup, this was just too much for my heart.

Of course, we later learned this was actually Klaus in Tyler's body, but STILL.

This was the first time Damon told Elena he loved her, way back when they were just friends. He knew he didn't deserve her, and he didn't want to make her sad or uncomfortable, so he made her forget. I'M NOT CRYING, YOU'RE CRYING.

All his family and friends came to support him, with his best friend Damon joining him as he drifted off. Of course, Bonnie showed up and forced him to become an evil vampire-killing vampire, but it was SO SAD before that happened!

Elena did NOT expect this, nor did she expect to lose her best friend at the same time. Bonnie later sent Damon back from the prison world to Elena, but by that time she'd ERASED ALL HER GOOD MEMORIES OF HIM TO COPE!!

I am still mad at Stefan for this. NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO HURT MY PRECIOUS BB CAROLINE!!!!

14. When Elena had to stay in a coma for the remainder of Bonnie's life, and all the main characters said goodbye to her.

This was especially sad because Nina Dobrev was leaving the show. No one can tell me these goodbyes weren't real!!

I felt so bad for Damon!!

This whole storyline was kind of crazy, but also really sad. Damon was literally going to spend 60 years essentially dead right when Stefan needed him most. He was literally the one who'd gotten Stefan into this mess in the first place! I couldn't believe he just walked away from his brother like that.

For the first time, she admitted he was her best friend. Seeing as she'd already lost Elena, it was devastating to lose Damon too. Especially because he didn't even tell her!!

Matt really started to annoy me in the end, but I also couldn't really blame him for hating vampires so much. He'd lost so many people he loved to vampirism, but then only had himself to blame for his wife's death. Matt deserved a better ending.

Jeremy rushed to see her one last time, but it was too late. Bonnie eventually came back, but by that time Jeremy was gone. They never got a true reunion after this.

I always thought this part was super messed up. He literally TORTURED his own daughter because she was a vampire, after Caroline had already dealt with a mom who hated her vampirism. It killed me that they didn't accept her for who she was.

She had such a complicated relationship with her father, who abandoned then tortured her. But still, having to lose him in this way was absolutely horrible.

Bonnie really went through the wringer, and this was really the final straw. I could not BELIEVE they killed Enzo so late in the game, after they worked so hard to redeem his character. I know Stefan's humanity was off, but I'm still mad about this.

I CRIED SO HARD. Damon had such a good character arc, which culminated in him compelling Stefan to leave so that he could sacrifice himself, even though it meant he'd never see Elena again. It didn't work Stefan ended up tricking him and dying in place of Damon. But this scene where they both tried to save each other was such a tear-jerker.

SO. FRIKKEN. SAD. They had literally JUST gotten married.

When he told her Damon was finally a man who deserved her, and that he was the better brother...I really lost it.

Caroline and Stefan never got the happy ending they deserved together!!!!
