The Witcher 3: 10 Differences Between Vampires and Higher Vampires – TheGamer

Vampires and Higher Vampires couldn't be more different. Here's the biggest differences between the two.

Geralt faces many different monsters throughout The Witcher 3. Some are sensible and can be reasoned with (the succubi, dopplers, godlings), others are mindless beasts that will attack Geralt, and the only option for him is to kill them.

And then there are the vampires who offer both of these options. The lesser vampires are usually bound to attack and try to have a taste of Geralt's blood. The higher vampires, on the other hand, are much more complex creatures who are in many ways similar to humans. There are many important differences between the ordinary and lesser vampires that any player of the DLC Blood and Wine should know.

Since higher vampires don't require blood to survive and only drink it the same way people would drink wine, they don't need to live close to humans. Lesser vampires, on the other hand, usually reside in areas where people live. Katakans, for example, seem to have a soft spot for large cities that offer them the opportunity to hunt down their prey easily.

Higher vampires are relatively rare, certainly less common than lesser vampires. It then makes sense they seem to know each other, and form relationships. They live for a long time unless another higher vampire doesn't kill them, and this way, they can keep each other company, build friendships. Lesser vampires, on the other hand, mostly live alone - because they don't want to share their prey with others.

Unsurprisingly, higher vampires are much stronger than ordinary vampires. They can easily kill a swarm of lesser vampires. Regis doesn't look like a fighter but appearances can be deceiving. And when Dettlaff's vampires attack Beauclair after Syanna had failed to meet Dettlaff, Regis helps Geralt fight the aggressive vampires - or he can kill them all by himself. Higher vampires, on the other hand, can only be killed by other higher vampires - so lesser vampires can't end their lives.

Geralt's witcher medallion gives him the opportunity to find magical creatures in his proximity. That includes a large number of the beasts he fights - and warns Geralt that an attack is about to come.

However, higher vampires are the one exception to the rule. Geralt's medallion doesn't detect them the way it does lesser vampires, which means the higher vampires can easily blend in with humans.

It's been mentioned before but is important enough to point out - higher vampires, unlike their less evolved relatives, don't need blood to survive. They do, however, still drink it. Human blood allows higher vampires to reach a state of euphoria that they wouldn't be able to enter otherwise. And on a more practical note, drinking blood is also a good way how higher vampires can hurt their enemies in a fight.

Lesser vampires are fast and strong, but intelligence-wise, they remain far behind the higher vampires. Lesser vampires are mostly driven by their instincts, their desire to imbibe blood. That can cloud whatever judgment they have and makes it that much easier for Geralt to lure them into a trap and kill them. Higher vampires, however, are much more careful and they tend to think before they act.

Since higher vampires aren't controlled by their bloodthirst the same way lesser vampires are, that allows them to blend in with the humans much better. And they can also form friendships with humans or even find romantic partners among them, are they so inclined.

Regis is one of Geralt's closest friends, and they've known each other for a long time. There's also the case of Dettlaff who falls for Syanna who's a human and they become a couple for a while.

Higher vampires tend to be secretive and humans know very little about their existence, culture, way of life... However, higher vampires are highly intelligent, and throughout the years, they left their mark on the world. Lesser vampires are all about killing others, while higher vampires were known to conduct experiments on humans to learn more about them, figure out what makes them tick. Geralt finds out more about it when he visits Tesham Mutna where he can also loot one of the best armors of the game.

It's a rare power and not every higher vampire has it - but higher vampires can control lesser vampires, influence their actions, make them do what they want. Dettlaff possesses this power, and he uses it against Beauclair when Syanna doesn't go to him after he discovers her betrayal. As for other powers, higher vampires are also stronger than lesser vampires, long-lived, and have mental powers that allow them to manipulate people.

Finally, there's also the fact that lesser vampires don't look human more often than not. Higher vampires have both human-like and vampiric form, and they can switch between them whenever they like. Lesser vampires are mostly stuck in their beast forms, with a few notable exceptions - like Hubert, the vampire responsible for the murders in Novigrad.
