Vampire Diaries: 5 Ways Stefan Is A Better Vampire Than Edward (& 5 Reasons The Opposite Is True) – Screen Rant

Vampire Diaries and Twilight both featured memorable vampires in Stefan and Edward, but which one is truly the better of the two?

It's vampire versus vampire. Back in the early 2000s vampires reigned supreme and took over the supernatural genre. Vampires, werewolves and witches popped up left and right when to came to movies, books and television shows. The two most popular works to come out of it were Twilight, which started it all, and the acclaimed show, The Vampire Diaries.

Both had different versions of the blood-sucking supernatural creature. With Twilight, fans fell hard for the sparkly and alluring Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson). Then came the handsome and moral Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley). Pinning fang againstfang, Edward and Stefan are each the better vampire in their own ways.

Both Stefan and Edward have a similar storylinein their past. Stefan, at one point in time, was known as The Ripper who murdered and drank the blood of countless victims. He turned off his humanity and had no sympathy. This is where Edward wins as a better vampire.

Edward too went through a phase of consuming human blood. But his victims weren't victims at all. They were people who had done bad deeds and evaded justice for their crimes. Despite feeling the gravity of his decisions, Edward was ultimately aware of the consequences of what he was doing, unlike Stefan.

If looking at both characters previous lives, one can safely say that Edward is hindered in many ways. He's forced to relive high school over and over again in new towns. What a nightmare. Not much is known about Edward's personal life and his adventures before meeting Bella.

Stefan wins at having a way more fun and fruitful life than Edward. To start, he wasn't dying from Spanish influenza.Stefan went on to live a life on his own without having to worry for anyone else. He even had his Ripper life where he wined and dined in luxury. Not to mention, he never had to go to high school over and over. He could also walk in the sun. Not to mention Stefan also became human again.

Perks of Edward's vampirism is that they find their one true love or soulmate. Despite the movies never having actually admitted to it. He found his true love in Bella from the start. Simply by the drug-like smell of her blood. Their relationship was cemented from the start.

Fro Stefan, he doesn't have this luxury. In their world, there's no one love. Just intense fascination and devotion. Hence why Elena went through different partners and so did Stefan. Stefan's love was more human-based than supernatural. Edward even wins in that he was able to have a child.

If combing through all of Stefan's good deeds outside of Elena, there're are way too many. Stefan has a soft spot that often led him to try and save everyone he cared for. Sometimes even people he considered enemies. Stefan gets some serious brownie point for this seeingas many times he wasn't as selfish. Spoiler! Stefan even sacrificed himself to save Mystic Falls.

Edward, on the other hand, was incredibly consumed by Bella. Everything revolved around her and her safety. He never really worried about his family because they could hold their own. He also had ill feelings towards the wolves and often showed little concern for them. Edward did show concern forBella's father in the first movie.

Stefan andEdward both have this perk about them when it comes to who's the better person. In New Moon, it starts with the cataclysmic event of Bella's birthday at the Cullen house. This leads t Edward making the decision to leave and break up with Bella. Causing her tospiral into depression.

Edward was willing to break her heart and leave after realizing that his world wasn't safe for her. After finding out she was possibly dead, he was ready to expose himself in order for the Volturi to kill him. Many can say that Stefan was a bitselfish in getting involved with Elena knowing the bag of worms it would unleash.

Fans of the show were either Team Stefan or Team Damon. The relationship between Elena and the Salvatore brothers had many fans on edge and experiencing whiplash. Many thought Elena and Stefan would make it to the end. That's until Damon arrived. As the show progressed, Stefan came to realize Elena's affection for his brother.

As much as he loved her, Stefan let Elena make the decision on who she wanted to be with. This takes some serious guts, especially when it's a woman who resembles your ex who ends up falling in love with your brother. In the end, Stefan let her go so she can truly be happy. As well as Damon finally getting his happy ending.

Compared to Edward, Stefan is more human in many ways. Without his daylight ring, Stefaneasily burns in the sun while Edward just sparkles. Like a diamond in the sky. Throughout the show, audiences have seen Stefanbe stabbed multiple times punches, kicked and ended up bloody and injured.

Stefan also has a reaction to an herb called Vervain. For Edward, none of this applies. From scenesof how vampires are killed, their bodies are like stone. Hence why they can't easily be killed or stabbed. Edward also doesn't have any blood. Without a daylight ring, Stefan could easily be killed by Edward.

While Edward and Stefanare both strikingly handsome and would turn heads no matter what, there's a difference to how well they can lay low. Edward has described that his family has to move away every number ofyears and re-enter high school to keep up the ruse. Seems tedious.

For Stefan, it's easier. He looks young enough yet still mature to enter high school but also leaves it completely if need be. He also has tan skin and a rosy complexion that make him look more human. He also doesn't sparklein the sun andhas more free reign on where he can go and keep up appearances. Edward and his family are too gorgeous to the pointit's bizarre.

When it came to the anatomy of a vampire in Twilight, audiences know that they need blood to survive and satiate theirhunger. They can also survive on animal's blood like Stefan does. But audiencesdon't really know what happens if they don't feed for long periods of time. In the show, blood is a big deal.

Audienceshave seen Stefan drink human blood to help heal fatal wounds. It's a much bigger life source and verypersonal. Edward would win in this regard seeing as he's more indestructiblethat way and doesn't need blood to heal. He's solid as a rock. While Stefan does have the ability torapidly heal, Edward never seems to get hurt. Edward also has the added advantage of having venom in his saliva which can be fatal.

The humanity switch used intheshow can be seen as a perk or as a bad tool. The vampires in the show are capable of turning off their humanity and no longer feel sympathy, regret, or pain. Stefan once turned his off and became a ruthless killer. His past also made him more compassionate and self-aware of the gravity of bad decisions.

Edward doesn't have this safety switch. He's forced to live withall his regrets and pain for the rest of his immortal life. There's some perk to the humanity switch like when Elena couldn't deal with Jeremy's death and the only way to cope was to turn it off.
