Wallaceburg writer and artist releases Vampire-based kids book – Sarnia and Lambton County This Week

Jere Welter opens a page of his cartoon children's book, A Tale of 30 Vampires, at Main Phase in Wallaceburg on Nov. 5. Jake Romphf

This vampire doesnt go out, hes too busy blaming all of his teammates in online gaming.

This vampire likes to pick fights in saloons, but always chickens out of duels at high noon.

Those are some passages on of the pages of Wallaceburg writer and artist Jere Welters new book, A Tale of 30 Vampires.

Each page in the book tells the story of a different vampire character and includes rhyme-scheme depicting whats happening on that pages mini-story.

Some of it is a little scary, but most of it is funny, he said.

Welter said the book is aimed at older children, basically anyone Grade 6 and older.

The digital artwork that tells each vampires tale was all done by Welter himself. Hes been drawing for his whole life, but taught himself how to make the computer-generated cartoon art by reading several books and watching online videos.

The book-making process started in early 2019, but the first rhyme came to Welter one day as he was running on a treadmill and watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The rest of the books inspiration came from Welters interest in the classic vampire characters from the 80s and 90s, such as The Lost Boys and Dracula.

Making a book itself has been a long time coming for Welter.

Its something Ive always wanted to do, he said. If I were going to read a book as a kid, these are the kind of books I would read, (ones) with outrageous monsters, but always kind of light hearted in tone.

Welter said the book is just for general entertainment.

I just want to make people laugh and hopefully they enjoy the cartoons, he said.

A Tale of 30 Vampires is available on Amazon and there are some signed copies at Main Phase in Wallaceburg. For his next project, Welter plans on doing a spot-the-difference colouring book.
