Buffy: Do Spike and Buffy love each other? – Express

Buffy The Vampire Slayer has just made a comeback on All4 and it has attracted plenty of fans - old and new. The series follows protagonist Buffy Summers (played by Sarah Michelle Gellar) who is tasked with saving the world from demons. Fans are wondering whether Buffy and antagonist Spike (James Marsters) really did love each other.

Spike was a fan-favourite character in the series as he was loved for his cool and collected nature, despite being considered as one of the 'bad guys'.

When he was first introduced to the show, he only had one mission - to kill the slayer.

He had been known throughout the centuries as being a famous killer of previous slayers, and he was determined to keep his record.

But when he got to know Buffy better, he started to develop some empathy for her plight, and he admitted he had feelings for her.

The true extent of their relationship is yet to be explained, but there were signs that they genuinely cared about each other.

Spike had been in a relationship with his deranged girlfriend Drusilla (Juliet Landau), but their romance was strained as they had very different personalities.

The pair's relationship was also tested when Drusilla figured out the extent of Spike's interest in Buffy.

Spike did eventually express his love for Buffy, but she was adamant she did not feel the same.

However they did spend the night together on more than one occasion, and fans were wondering if they would become an official couple.

Buffy had already been in a relationship with Angel (David Boreanaz) and she failed to accept the fact she had some feelings towards his enemy Spike.

Some fans had been rooting for the Spike and Buffy relationship to continue, and it inspired a plethora of fan-fiction.

One fan said on Twitter: "The absolute tenderness in s7... the scene where buffy tries to see if spike is hurt and he grabs her hand.... oh my god im gonna explode [sic]."

Another fan said: "Buffy and Spike were my favourite couple. Spike was hilarious. What girl doesn't want to be with a guy who has the best lines?"

Fans were swooning over some of Spike's lines as he tried to express his feelings for Buffy.

He once told her he had held her and watched her sleep, and it was "the best night of his life".

However, some fans preferred to stay on Team Angel, with one saying: "Loved Spike, but not Spike and Buffy. The relationship was extremely toxic."

Spike did eventually come to terms with the fact he and Buffy would never be a couple, but he remained close friends with her.

He also grew close with Buffy's younger sister, Dawn (Michelle Trachtenberg), and he protected her from trouble.

The ultimate test of their relationship came when Spike sacrificed himself so Buffy and her fellow slayers-in-training could escape ultimate danger.

Speaking about how he played the role of Buffy's enemy and friend, Marsters said: "It was both very challenging and very easy. And I enjoyed every second of it.

"It was easy to be an actor in that you have a script, a piece of art that you are inspired by. "You get to follow the script, and when the script is very good its very inspiring.

"It leads you through your journey so in that way, it was very easy to come up with ideas for the character."
