Coffee Talk is a relaxed game where you chat with vampires and cat girls – NewsDio

There's nothing like looking out the window on a cold and rainy day, but Coffee talk approaches. On January 30 for the main gaming platforms, the game puts you inside the apron of a barista whose shop is only open after midnight.

The first thing you'll notice Coffee talk, beyond the magnificent pixel art, is the soundtrack. The mood is king here, and properly, the game allows you to set the low fidelity playlist in your establishment.

Under that relaxing exterior, however, there are deeply entrenched racial tensions. Every day of the game, you are greeted by the front pages of the newspapers full of headlines about all the fantastic inhabitants of this world. Here, everything from dwarves to elves, is real, and each one comes with its own policy and views, most of which will be obvious when you talk to your clients.

When customers approach the counter, they will be ready to ask for something you really have to do. Coffee talk It presents you with a variety of ingredients, which you use as the base, primary and secondary layers of your drink, depending on what you are preparing. For simpler drinks, you can simply search through an application in the game; a triple espresso, for example, is just a matter of selecting coffee + coffee + coffee. The game also allows you to run with latte art, which you can draw by hand.

But sometimes, people will ask for more complex drinks for which there is no guide. For those, you will have to use your best judgment. I have already bought a Chai and some strange drink that involves a bad egg, but fortunately, the recipients still drank them. (The game also allows you to throw up to five drinks per night to redo them, which is useful for when you're wrong.)

Interestingly, stories for customers are determined by the drinks you prepare, not by your dialogue options. A werewolf, for example, asks you to make him a ginger drink that will help you control the monthly "rages" in which he has to be held. I was also wrong with that drink, although the kind werewolf said he would come back to try again later. I have the feeling that if I don't do it well, in the long run it will have great ramifications for that character.

It may be more accurate to say that you play as a therapist, rather than as a barista. Much of the game is spent listening to your customers talk about their daily problems, giving everyone a sense of life. But the character's problems are not what you and I could face, because many of them are not human.

A troubled couple consisting of an elf and a succubus, for example, is distressed by their romance. Apparently, their parents will not approve the relationship due to cultural differences, but also due to differences in life expectancy: elves live for a long time. These characters will return later, sometimes alone, to discuss the most delicate points of the dilemma. You learn, for example, that while the succubus worships the elf, she does not want him to give up his immortality for her. It feels too much to ask.

However, not everything is drama. In a moment, you meet an alien who wears an astronaut suit that does not understand earthly customs. Other times, regular customers will simply order the usual and stick to their phones. Or, someone could order a drink and go sit somewhere else. I like those people. Memorizing your drinks makes everything feel more intimate, even if we don't really talk much. It is certainly preferable when users start arguing with each other, because their views do not align. Ugh

So far I have only played for a few hours, during which I have encountered all kinds of creatures, from mermaids to cat girls. Learning more about them with a cup of comforting coffee is a delight even if I can't always drink your drink exactly.

There is a demo available for Coffee talk on Steam and PlayStation store, if you want to try it.

Coffee Talk will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Windows PC on January 30. The game was played using a download code provided by Tone Productions. You can find additional information about Polygon's ethics policy here.
