‘Doctor Who’ Series 12: Three of the most obscure, creepy monsters who ought to be brought back on the show – MEAWW

'Doctor Who' has had a number of amazing villains including the deadly Daleks and the menacing Mondasian Cybermen, not to mention characters like the Master and other evil Time Lords. But there are a few monsters from the long history of 'Doctor Who' who we still don't know much about, though that just makes them even more terrifying.

Though Chris Chibnall didn't include too many classic 'Doctor Who' villains in his first season in charge of the show, Series 12 is expected to change all that. The upcoming season is expected to bring back a number of classic villains and hopefully a few of the more obscure ones as well. Here are three of our favorite obscure 'Doctor Who' monsters who we'd love to see brought back in the coming series:

First featured in the Series 2 story 'The Girl in the Fireplace', the Clockwork Droids are advanced machines who serve as maintenance crew on two starships, the SS Madame de Pompadour and the SS Marie Antoinette. These creepy killer machines are driven by simplistic programming but that has led to them committing a number of very creepy crimes including killing people and harvesting their organs to repair their ships.

Arguably one of the scariest monsters to appear on 'Doctor Who', the Vashta Nerada, "the shadows that melt the flesh", are microscopic swarms of creatures no bigger than specks of dust. Despite their small size, the Vashta Nerada are ravenous predators who can instantly kill any and all living things that wander into their midst, as we saw in the Series 4 story 'Silence in the Library'. In fact, the Vashta Nerada are so terrifying that they are the reason every sentient being in existence has an instinctive fear of the dark, the domain of the flesh-melting swarms.

Known also as Yssgaroth, the Great Vampires are figures from the darkest legends of Gallifrey, the Doctor's homeworld. They're gigantic monsters who can drain entire planets of their lifeforce and use their powerful hypnotic abilities to enslave entire races.

As if that's not scary enough, it's believed that the Yssgaroth is actually just a single dark being who manifests into different aspects and forms depending on the people observing it. An even wilder theory suggests that the Yssgaroth are a hostile force that's so far outside of anything we can even begin to comprehend that the only way our brains can perceive them is as gigantic monsters.

Whatever they truly are, the Great Vampire is one of the most obscure yet terrifying villains in 'Doctor Who' and except for their first appearance in Series 18 of Classic 'Doctor Who', the Vampires haven't been seen on screen. With today's visual effects, the Great Vampire would be the stuff of nightmares brought to life.

'Doctor Who' Series 12 will premiere on BBC America on January 1.
