Legacies: 10 Things That Contradict The Vampire Diaries – Screen Rant

After The Originals, Legacies is the second spinoff of The Vampire Diaries. These are all the ways the series is inconsistent with it's parent show.

Legacies is the second spinoff ofThe Vampire Diaries. The first spinoff,The Originals, focused on the more adult supernatural characters, andLegaciesprimarily focuses on the children of the supernatural characters. Hope is the daughter of Klaus and Hayley, the unusual triple hybrid. Lizzie and Josie are the last of the Gemini witch coven; they are the twin daughters of Jo, Alaric, and Caroline.

Aside from these three characters, there are many ways thatLegacies earns its title. The story takes places in the same setting asThe Vampire Diaries;the trials that each supernatural character goes through is similar, if not directly inherited, from their family; the mission and goal for characters to be good despite the challenge is consistent. However, not even good spinoffs are perfect, and there are things inLegacies that contradict The Vampire Diaries.

Alaric serves as the head master of the school. However, he frequently states to other characters that he started the school. Any fan ofThe Vampire Diaries would know that this isn't completely correct. Alaric and Caroline started the school together in order to give their daughters (the Gemini coven twins) a safe place to live and learn.

As a matter-of-fact, had Caroline not been as successful of a fundraiser as she was and had Klaus not donated a lot of money to her mission, then the school wouldn't have been effective. The fact that Alaric frequently leaves Caroline out of his narrative, taking all the credit, may be a mere contradiction or a hint of a large ego.

InThe Vampire Diaries grimoires are very important in how Bonnie becomes a powerful witchthrough her family's heritage of magic. Her family's grimoire is a way that she stays connected to her grandmother and ancestors. Once she's in the Gemini prison world with Damon, she finds her family's grimoire in order to find information that will help them.

On top of this, the connection to family and ancestors is in bothThe Vampire DiariesandThe Originals. Witches are schooled, supported, and at times, fueled by their ancestor-witches. This deep connection to family roots isn't present inLegacies. What they learn about magic comes from classes and a library, not their ancestors. This legacy isn't continued.

While Stefan and Damon definitely lived in a mansion, it wasn't shown to be as massive as the school. It could be that the mansion has been added on to, but this information isn't shared with the viewer. As it stands, it seems almost like a living organism that keeps on growing, not restricted to its former dimensions.

In a few scenes, it looks like there is an auditorium-type room in the school. This would be a room that viewers didn't see inThe Vampire Diaries, proving an inconsistency with its rooms and overall size.

At first, vervain is mentioned inLegacies. Then it disappears as a plot device. However, the whole town had been on vervain, as it was in the water supply. This doesn't remain constant, as the humans in town become easy to manipulate.

Also, the show is missing the historical connection with Mystic Falls. For instance, the town knew about vampires and once found a way to magically not allow vampires to enter. Also, there was a town council that held the history and looked after the safety of the town. Now, none of the town people seem to know about vampires.

The Merge is a frightening tradition of the Gemini Coven. When the twins turn 22, they must do the Merge. This means that one twin wins and literally absorbs the other twin, killing their twin in the process. WhenLegaciesstarts, viewers know that Caroline and Alaric are frantically looking for a solution so that both of their daughters will live.

Then, comes along Dark Josie, who basically says that the Merge traditionally happens at 22, but it can happen at anytime. This contradicts the tradition set-up in theThe Vampire Diaries. Also, it doesn't make sense. Wouldn't Caroline and Alaric have known about this possibility all along?

InThe Vampire Diaries, one of Stefan's biggest challenges is his Ripper nature. If he feeds on human blood, he can't stop--brutally killing the people in the process. If he doesn't have his humanity turned on, it's worse. InThe Vampire Diaries, only two main vampires have this Ripper-nature: Stefan and his mother. There is no reason why these two are Rippers, and the Ripper-nature is presented as rare.

However, inLegacies, the Ripper nature is explained that when vampires were timid or insecure or gentle as humans, they can become rippers as vampires. It's not presented as a rare condition. Two characters have it, but unlike Stefan, it's not as hard of a struggle for them to resist it if they keep their humanity turned on. This also contradicts the original show.

Alaric says that they only will take vampires who are teenagers and who haven't had a history of killing people. However, even inThe Originals(the first spinoff), there is a contradiction with this, as Hope's first boyfriend was a student, and he had been a vampire for decades.

Then, inThe Vampire Diaries,Klaus tells a young-vampire Caroline that she needs to adjust how she thinks of years, that vampires don't age the same way. So, how if Alaric determines a vampire appropriate for the school based on how old they are in human years, it contradictsThe Vampire Diaries, and it's inconsistent withThe Originals, too.

InThe Vampire DiariesandThe Originals, viewers learn that the werewolf trait is inherited. Also, there are family-packs. Hayley spent much of her story early on trying to find her pack. She betrayed Tyler inThe Vampire Diaries once she found out that Klaus had information about her pack's history and knew where they were located. InThe Originals, she finds her pack, and by doing such, finds her purpose and understands her identity.

Legaciespresents the werewolves at the school in their own school pack as if it was some type of frat or sorority. Regardless of their family history and heritage, all of the young werewolves are in the pack. The leader of the pack is determined by a fight, not a bloodline.

If viewers were to followThe Vampire DiariesandThe Originals, they would know that Hope is supposed to be older than the twins. She is supposed to be two years older than them. Yet, inLegacies, all three are presented as classmates of the same age. They have backstories of being in the same classes together and having similar memories.

Unless Hope was held back for two years and it just wasn't brought up in the series, this is a big misstep.

The Caroline that fans know fromThe Vampire Diarieswas a dedicated and fierce mother. She almost married Alaric just so she could be a family for her daughters. She'svery protective of her daughters, and she also can be a controlling character.

So, the fact that her daughters have been through tragedy and encountered threats, and Caroline is still away, doesn't make sense. Knowing that Caroline aspired to be as good of a mother as her mother Liz makes her lack of presence seem contradictory to her motivations and nature. Sure, she's looking for a cure for the Merge. Sure, Lizzie spent time with her in Europe, and Josie called her for advice. But, still, this extended (and for two seasons) absence is extremely contradictory to her character.
