Magic: The Gathering – Sorin Markov Is the PERFECT Antihero | CBR – CBR – Comic Book Resources

Magic: The Gathering's Sorin Markov will save the day -- but only if it makes sense. He's not bound by justice and ideals.

Planeswalkers have long since been the central focus of Magic: The Gathering'slore. These unique individuals have the Spark, allowing them to gain incredible new powers and roam the planes of the Multiverse, from the five shards of Alara to thestorybook world of Lorwyn to thedeserts of Amonkhet. Some planeswalkers use their talents for villainy, while others fight for justice. Where does the vampireSorin Markovfit into all this?

Sorin Markov is an ancient vampire from the plane of Innistradand the grandson of the plane's first-ever vampire, Edgar Markov. Sorin is a pre-Mending planeswalker, vastly more powerful than the members of the Gatewatch, and he's used his talents to reshape the entire Multiverse's destiny -- as an antihero, that is. He'll save the day, but only if he gets something out of it.

Sorin Markov sets himself apart from noble heroeslike Gideon Jura and Ajani Goldmane in one particular way: he is not fixated on a higher ideal of justice and law. Gideon and Ajani swore to uphold justice and defend the innocent at the cost of their own lives for its own sake, but Sorin arrives at the same destination for different reasons. Sorin is sometimes a hero of the people, but for practical reasons rather than noble ones. He'll save the day if it makes sense, but not out of the goodness of his heart. Sorin has demonstrated this more than once.

Vampires were created on Innistrad as a solution to a horrible famine. After all, if some humans became vampires, then they wouldn't need regular food anymore, easing the strain on everyone else. Those vampires would control the human population by drinking blood. However, the vampires got carried away, so Sorin took control of the situation.

For the sake of balance and humanity's survival (and nothing more), Sorin went to great lengths to create Avacyn, a mighty archangel, and allowed humanity to build the entire Church of Avacyn around her. Balance was restored, and no one knew that they had Sorin Markov to thank. Sorin didn't want any accolades, either; he did what he had to, and he moved on.
