Magic: The Gathering – The Life of Sorin Markov, Revealed | CBR – CBR – Comic Book Resources

Magic's Sorin Markov is a heroic vampire from Innistrad, fighting everything from his fellow vampires to the vengeful Nahiri, the Lithomancer.

InMagic: The Gathering, powerful planeswalkers tour the Multiverse, from Ugin, the spirit dragon of benevolence to Ajani Goldmane, the leonin warrior from the Naya shard of Alara. But let's not forget Sorin Markov. Sorin Markov's first planeswalker card appeared in the 2009 Zendikar set, and ever since then, Sorin has been a staple of the Magic story. But his life's tale goes beyond the scope of Zendikar; he's had a hand in numerous major events across the Multiverse.

Sorin Markov was born a mortal man on the dark world of Innistrad, but the vampire race was created later. Sorin's grandfather, Edgar Markov, turned to demonic forces to solve a famine. The solution was to turn some humans into vampires so they would cull humanity somewhat and not compete with the other humans for food. Edgar and Sorin both became vampires, and Sorin also had the Planeswalker spark.

Sorinplaneswalked to and from from Innistrad, and he soon realized that the vampires on his homeworld were getting out of control, so he created the mighty archangel Avacyn to give the humans a fighting chance. Then, he met two more powerful planeswalkers: Ugin and Nahiri the lithomancer. The three of them used their powers to create hedrons and advanced magic to trap the vicious, parasitic Eldrazi race on Zendikar, and they swore to return if the Eldrazi became a problem again. However, the Eldrazi caused great damage to Zendikar, and Sorin did little to help Nahiri contain the damage, creating a rift between them.

Eventually, they came to blows, and Sorin sealed Nahiri in the Helvault, a giant moon-silver prison on Innistrad. Over1000 years later, the Eldrazi were slowly freeing themselves, and Sorin didn't have Nahiri or Ugin to help, so he traveled to the Eye of Ugin with Nissa and a vampire named Anowon. Nissa soonhad an idea: what if the Eye was destroyed, and the freed Eldrazi fled Zendikar entirely?

Nissa hoped that this plan would rid Zendikar of the horrible Eldrazi, but she was wrong; the Eldrazi stayed and wreaked incredible devastation. Sorin cut ties with Nissa. He needed help, and he eventually got it from Ugin and the newly-formed Gatewatch. At last, the Eldrazi were trapped and destroyed, and Zendikar was able to begin the healing process. By the time of the Zendikar Rising set, the Eldrazi were a distant memory.
