Take a look inside the clinic using ‘vampire treatment’ to help people regrow their hair – Nottinghamshire Live

A beauty treatment made famous by reality TV star Kim Kardashian is being put to use in Nottinghamshire to help people regrow their hair.

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is a non-surgical treatment which involves taking blood from a patient, spinning it in a centrifuge to separate the plasma and then injecting that back into the scalp.

The service has been offered to customers at Hillside Hair Clinic, headquartered in Stapleford, for the last year.

Regina Kazlauskaite, managing director and PRP practitioner, said: "So far we have had incredible results.

"Over time the diameter of the hair improves. What PRP does is it starts reversing the process of hair follicles shrinking, which is, effectively, balding.

"The PRP stops that happening and eventually grows it back."

When used by Kardashian the procedure was known as a "vampire facial" as it was using blood to rejuvenate the body.

The star has since said she would not use it again for that purpose but it is still used in many other areas of healthcare.

This includes dentistry, where it is used for implants, eye surgery and also in orthopaedics.

For hair, the platelets that are extracted from the blood have "five to six times more growth factor", which stimulates the hair follicles.

Dr Wilf Ali, medical director at Hillside, which also provides hair transplants, said: "It kick starts the hair that hasn't started to grow."

Medical evidence has increased in recent years demonstrating the procedure can work to regrow hair.

However, patients need to keep up with post operative care, which includes having a good diet. It also will only work on patients who still have follicles.

Miss Kazlauskaite explained: "It doesn't make new hair . As long as the hair is still there it starts to bring it back. If someone has lost their hair completely the only way to bring it back is through a transplant."

Customers who choose to undergo the treatment will have three, 25-minute sessions. After this comes to an end, there will be maintenance sessions at the clinic every six months.

The sessions, which are used by both men and women, cost 295.

Hillside says the treatment has been a major success in a year which has culminated with the clinic being rated outstanding by the Care Quality Commission.

The company, which also has centres in Manchester and London, was graded outstanding in being caring and responsive and good for being safe, effective and well-led.

Miss Kazlauskaite said of the overall rating: "That is what we were aiming for. It is a lot of paper work and a lot of hours and research. We were striving to be better than what was required."
