The Little Vampires are a group of tiny monsters. How tiny? This tiny:

They try very hard to be fierce, scary creatures of the night. But they fail spectacularly at it.

The Little Vampires have a lot of wrong ideas about a lot of things, like blood oranges, toaster ovens, and party planning. They are confused about bats because they have some of the same misconceptions about them that we humans do. They think bats are nothing more than spooky creatures of the night that terrorize people, which is what the Little Vampires want to be.

Bats aren't as scary as the Little Vampires think! This book explains to them, and the reader, that bats are a wonderfully diverse group of mammals. Scientific observations over many decades have shown that bats serve vital functions in nature, and are no more threatening to humans than any other wild animal.

Why did I feel the need to write and illustrate this book? Because I love vampires and bats when they're together in scary movies or on Halloween decorations. But it saddens me how the association of bats and vampires has caused so many prejudices about bats. I decided to use my fictional vampires to address some of these prejudices by presenting the scientific facts about bats in a humorous and entertaining way.

The Little Vampires Are Confused About Bats will be a 6-inch by 9-inch hardcover, perfectly sized for young readers' hands. Here's a mockup of the final product:

The page count is approximately 56 pages. The book will be printed on high-quality matte paper with a hardcover binding by PrintNinja.

The book is near completion. I just need to complete the art for a few pages, and make any revisions suggested by bat experts that are editing the text. It will be sent to the printer a week after the Kickstarter campaign ends, should the campaign be fully funded. It will ship within two weeks after it arrives at my studio. If all goes according to plan, backers should have the book by late summer.

That's me! And I have been writing and illustrating the (mis)adventures of the Little Vampires and their monster friends for ten years. Little Vampires, the hardcover book, premiered at San Diego Comic-Con in 2007. I published the sequel, Little Vampires and Friends, in 2009. The Little Vampires webcomic premiered in October of 2009, and has entertained readers with 900 comics since then. I've collected the comics into three printed volumes, and also wrote and published The Metaphysical Ponderings of Dogs, which was illustrated by Canadian artist Marie McNeill.

For this book, I did extensive research about bats to make sure the text is educational as well as entertaining. The book is written so that readers at a high third-grade level and up can enjo it independently. But it will also make a great book to read aloud to younger readers.

To get an add-on reward, just pledge for a backer level that's eligible for the add-on you want, then increase your pledge by the amount of the add-on. For example, if you are in the US, and want three extra copies of the book, you would pledge at least the 20 level, then add 63 (54 for the books, plus 9 extra shipping) for a total of 83. Make a note of what add-ons you would like so when the surveys go out after the campaign is funded, you'll be able to specify what add-ons you have pledged for.

For shipping within the US, we will use USPS Priority Mail. This will allow us to track your package. We will also use USPS Priority Mail to ship all international orders.

The main risks with any publishing project are unforeseen printing and shipping delays. While unlikely, this can happen, and could delay delivery to you.

The art and writing are very near completion, and I don't foresee any problems getting the book to the printer on time once the project is funded. Printing books is something I have done a half-dozen times before, so I know what to expect from the process.

If any issues should come up, you can count on me to keep you up-to-date. This project would not be possible without your backing, and I intend to honor that by keeping you informed!
