The Originals: 10 Things That Already Haven’t Aged Well – Screen Rant

As far as TV shows about vampires and hybrids go, The Vampire Diaries spin-off The Originals had plenty of aspects that certainly didn't age well.

Many shows that have aired on The CW have notbeen known for being flawless, but they are certainly known for being fun. The Originals differed from other shows on the network because it was way more gruesome and truly embraced the horrors of being a vampire, while also showingthe family dynamics of being undead.

The Originals was loved for being a more mature spin-off of The Vampire Diaries, following characters that fans already had great affection for. While The Originals is exciting with loadsof action,it still has plenty of things that viewers can easily critique.

Vampires that are over a thousand years old dating high schoolers is one trope that has become way more creepy than cute over these past few years.

While many of the vampires on The Originalshave romantic relationships with other adults, Kol Mikelson ended up in a relationship with Davina Sinclair who was still in high school. This concept is one that has also been highly criticized in the Twilight films and on The Vampire Diaries. It's understandable that vampires can't find someone their own age, but they can surely find adults or other vampires.

One thing that would have been more heavily criticized if The Originals had come out this year instead of in 2013 would have been the way Marcel turned into a vampire.

On the show, his origin story shows Klaus Mikelson rescuing him from slavery. This was a really uncomfortable scene and Klaus constantly acted possessive of Marcel after that happened, which made the whole situation even worse to watch. Although the show is accurate to the times, there are plenty of other ways viewers could have seen Marcel turn.

Many of the men on this show are far beyond bad boys, Klaus Mikaelson is a heartless vampire that doesn't care about harming innocent lives. Kol Mikaelson was even willing to harm his own family members.

Yet on The Originals, these cold-blooded killers are romanticized for being cruel and having a soft spot for the women in their lives. In reality, a woman who knowingly dates a murderer is certainly just as evil as him. Also, trying to turn them into better men is a huge stretch considering theirpast.

In recent times, owning up to your mistakes and apologizing is incredibly important. This is something that Klaus Mikaelson has failed to do countless times.

There are so many people that he has hurt on the show and his never given a sincere apology to, such as Davina Sinclair and all of his siblings. Instead of acknowledging his wrong-doings, he continues to make the same mistakes repeatedly and always treats his family badly.

Klaus has put a stake in each and every member of his family so many times, it's a surprise they kept going back to him. When it comes to his siblings, it's clear that he has a superiority complex over them.

He constantly tries to control their lives, and if they don't obey them he threatens them. He refused to allow Rebekah to have freedom from him and even staked her when he found out that she was dating Marcel. He's overly controlling of his family, which is something that wouldn't fly well on television these days.

The CW is known for having a lack of diverse casts on its shows, and The Originals is one that follows in the same path. Out of the main characters on the show, Marcel is the only one who isn't white.

There have been other people of color on the show, but they were either reduced to insignificant roles or later killed off. This is also a problem seen on The Original's sister show The Vampire Diaries, in which Bonnie Bennett was also its sole character of color.

Other than Klaus manipulating his family in order to get what he wants, there were plenty of other relationships on this show that revolved around lying.

Kol Mikaelson pretended to be an ally to Davina Sinclair when in reality he was just using her to take advantage of her magic abilities. Later in the show, fans also see Hope being used by Roman (her crush) in order to help his momget revenge on Hope'sfamily.

One of the main reasons fans loved Klaus Mikaelson so much was because he was a bad boy with a sensitive side. He would have done anything to save his daughter, Hope, even if he had to harm innocent people.

When she grew up, the way he treated her was totally unexpected and awful. He pushed her out of his life and acted as if she didn't exist, which caused plenty of emotional trauma to her. He was constantly abusive to his family, and it would be expected that he would learn from his mistakes and treat his daughter better but he didn't.

For a show that had an abundance of women in it, it is quite of a surprise that all of their stories dealt with their relationships. These days, there are higher expectations when it comes to women in film and television.

On The Originals, Rebekah's plotline heavily surrounds her forbidden love with Marcel. Davina Sinclair, who was one of the most powerful witches was tossed aside and barely present on the show after she ended up with Kol. Hayley and Camille, the two leading women on the series were both killed off after failed relationships.

Similar to The Vampire Diaries, this show also doesn't fare well when it comes to its diverse characters. Just like Bonnie Bennett, Marcel was constantly used as a plot device, either to stir up drama or solve the problems for the original family.

Many of the Black characters on the show are just there to assist the white main characters. Also, the originals caused so many problems for Marcel, he hardly experienced peace and is constantly looked down upon by Klaus.
