The Vampire Diaries: 10 Characters Who Just Didn’t Look Right In The Show – Screen Rant

The Vampire Diaries underwent a few changes from book to screen, but how do the characters look different from their descriptions in the adaptation?

The CW's memorable hit vampire series The Vampire Diaries lasted for nearly a decade and it's popularity doesn't seem to have waned all that much since the show came to it's end. However what some fans might not be aware of is that the show is actually a loose adaptation of a book series of the same name.

In the books by L.J. Smith, many of the characters that make it to the screen are the same as those who exist on the page, however the descriptions and physical appearances of many of those characters slightly or sometimes drastically differs from what fans saw on the series.

Sage was a relatively minor character in both The Vampire Diaries TV show and in the novel series, but this vampire character is prettysignificantly different in the translation. the book version of Sage was actually a male character, and was possibly an Old One (something vaguely analogous to an Original).

And in the books Sage was a tall, handsome, and muscular man with bronze hair and gold eyes, not a pretty redheaded woman.

Technically, Jeremy is one of the characters who's appearance changed the most from book to screen, but that is because essentially Jeremy didn't even exist in the novels.

In the books, Elena Gilbert has a younger sister, not a younger brother. Elena's sister Margaret was actually much younger, she was only a year old when she and Elena's parents died. And according to the books, she looks a lot like a young Elena.

Tyler Lockwood is actually called Tyler Smallwood in the original Vampire Diaries novels, and while he does bear a passing resemblance to the TV Tyler, there are some stark differences between the two characters as well.

In both book and show, Tyler is an athletic boy with dark brown eyes and black hair, and he's pretty physically intimidating. But the biggest difference is that in the novels, Tyler is extremely tall, landing at around 6 and a half feet.

Although the Klaus that everyone got to see on the TV adaptation of TVD is certainly memorable, there are some striking distinctions between the appearance of this Klaus and the description of Klaus in the books.

They do both have blue eyes, but Klaus' book version is described as having very bright eyes. In the books he's also very tall and Scandinavian looking, and he has very light, nearly white blond hair.

Caroline is yet another character who got an image makeover on the TV series, as her appearance in the books shares significant differences from her look in the series.

The most distinctivechanges are that she's very tall, very tan, and has auburn red hair. And the book version of Caroline is generally described as being very elegant and model-like, which doesn't feel too similar to Caroline's bubbly cheerleader personality in the show.

Bonnie Bennett is one of the many Vampire Diaries characters who underwent a name makeover in addition to a physical one, as her name is actually Bonnie McCullough in the books.

Bonnie McCullough has a bit of a stereotypical Celtic look to her, she's described as small, with reddish golden hair, fair skin and light brown eyes. Thankfully the TV adaptation decided to add some much-needed diversity to the book characters as they were originally described, so TV Bonnie Bennetthas a light brown complexion, dark brown eyes, and dark hair.

The Stefan Salvatore of the books is described looking similar to Damon, but with a more innocent and youthful quality to his appearance. Stefan's green eyes in the books pretty accurately match Paul Wesley's, as does the description of Stefan's overall size and physique.

However, Stefan is described in the books as having curly dark hair, which seems to be the biggest distinction between the two.

Damon actually bears a pretty strong resemblance to his book version. He's described as looking like Stefan (which is a little dubious in the TV show, as Wesley and Somerhalder don't look particularly alike), but with very fair skin and jet black hair.

However, one significant difference that show fans will undoubtedly notice is that Damon is said to have pitch black eyes, which is a pretty drastic difference from Somerhalder's distinctive bright blue eyes.

Katherine is one character who gets one of the most drastic makeovers in the series. The book character of Katherine von Swartzchild has been transformed into Katerina Petrova, and she and the original Katherine certainly are not doppelgangers.

The Katherine of the books has golden blonde hair and bright blue eyes, with fair skin despite the fact that she was often ill as a human girl.

Interestingly enough, aside from the fact that Elena and Katherine's blonde haired and blue eyed looks directly contrast to Nina Dobrev's dark hair and dark brown eyes, another huge difference with Elena's book character appearance is that she's not Katherine's identical twin.

Yes, she and Katherine look astonishingly alike, but Elena is significantly taller than Katherine and has darker blue and lighter blonde hair than Katherine, and they're both easily distinguishable from each other, they're not actually doppelgangers.
